Why do you assume intellectuals would be public figures? Universities and think tanks weren’t where you went if you wanted media attention, TV was. Intellectuals of the TV era rarely had their own show to share their ideas with the masses and today’s rarely have their own YouTube channels. These public streams are more just for educators of ideas rather than the thinkers who came up with them.

Where are intellectuals today then? I’d say that when the internet arrived they used to reside in forums in the early the 2000’s, but since those have degenerated it’s pretty much just Twitter where many post anonymously, and, astonishingly, 4chan.
