Is it a bad habit to start a book and drop it halfway through? I just can't seem to stop doing it.

i do it all the time. it means you're not enjoying the book and you need to put it down and read something else. don't listen to what /lit/urds will tell you. just read for yourself and what makes you happy bro.

No. Finishing books is a sign of a compulsive behaviour.

If it actually is a habit of course it's bad, but if you have bad luck finding one you like that's not really your fault.
If it's just a matter of not being assed to finish reading it then you're probably just undisciplined or don't actually enjoy reading.

Leaving books unfinished in itself is not necessarily a bad practice but always signifies an underlying issue with your reading habits/material.
The two questions that immediately comes to mind are:
Are you forcing yourself to read something that doesn't interest you?
Are you forcing yourself to strictly follow a specific method for reading?

I've come to read a lot of books on how to read well for some reason, and almost all of them are telling me to abandon the goal of reading them completely.

it's both ok to not finish one, and ok to feel bad about not having finished it

You should finish everything you read so that you remember to do some prior research about the material before starting your next book. Seems like you're not reading about topics that actually interest you if you keep not finishing them?
