I remember reading a book about (among other things) the practice of sending babies to nurses and foster mother instead of keeping them at home (for the working classes it allowed mothers to keep working, for the upper classes it allowed them to engage in status-reinforcing stuff like receptions and salons).

It sometimes took ghastly proportions, to the extent that babies were sent to their nurses in the countryside by entire chariots. Sometimes the nurses guarding the chariot would fall asleep and some infants would drop and be crushed under the wheels, or be left in snow to die of cold.

There's also this funny story of an errand boy who was tasked with bringing eight babies to a village and only arrived with seven and could never tell what happened to the eighth baby.

Not to say people in the past never loved their kids, but especially in infancy they tended to be seen as a replaceable commodity.
