About to go down this rabbit hole of 15 books. Is it worth or is it autistic hype?

why are burger fantasy writers so OBSESSED with Tolkien? kek even that fat cunt Martin added an extra R to his name just it was similar to Tolkien's initials

Outside of the Old West, there is a dearth of American mythology in the modern American mind. As a result, Tolkien and the quasimedieval Europe setting is the setting of choice for many American fantasy works.

Absolutely glacial pace. Maximalist fantasy I guess you would call it. Some cool ideas and fun action but a huge slog of needless description and repetitive (vaguely fetishistic) drama and power dynamics among characters - the character work is not that great. I would not read it again or try to finish it but it was a good distraction. Depends how much time you want to devote.

What about Robert E. Howard's Hyborian age, the setting of the Conan: The Barbarian tales? There has been movies based on Howard's writings and even comic books and graphic novels.

>>16289989

How are the actions scenes in the novels? Just asking because I've read on Wikipedia that Robert Jordan served a couple of tours in Vietnam, like how Tolkien served in World War I. Is it gory and bloody like Sapkowski's Witcher novels and George R.R. Martin's books(I've actually never read any of the ASOIAF books but have seen the battles on YouTube) or is it like Tolkien and reads more like the battles you read in history books?

Haven't read the books but I stumbled upon this blog article when googling something about Buddhism, incels and misogyny yesterday.

https://mythcreants.com/blog/four-sexist-themes-from-the-wheel-of-time/

"Women Are Portrayed as Evil for Doing an Important Job

"...At the start of the WoT books, the male half of the One Power has been tainted by the Dark One, a being who is basically the devil. This means that any male channeler will, sooner rather than later, go insane and kill everyone around them...

"The Red Ajah are the group of Aes Sedai – female channelers – tasked with dealing with this terrible situation. Rather than initiating a kill-on-sight policy or something equally draconian, these women go to great pains to capture any male channeler they can find. They then use their own power to remove the man’s ability, leaving him alive and no longer in danger of going insane.

"...The Red Ajah are portrayed as a bunch of man hating she-demons whose only real purpose in life is to make males miserable. They hate and distrust all men, even the Warders who are trained exclusively to aid and protect Aes Sedai. Oh, and a lot of them are lesbians, because of course they are."

>Is it worth
It's a top comfy journey, what hurt this series wasn't the slower pace but the long breaks between books as soon as he stopped resolving plotlines by the course of 1 book. This made the 7-8-9 book run slower than it is now, as it took 3 shorter books to resolve different plotlines simultaneously, instead of devoting each book to one of them. Still, some characters are intolerable or simply badly written, and we're talking about a 13+1 book epic fantasy series, which lacked a good editor (his editor was his wife, who didn't really reign him in). It's ambitious and it has some good ideas, some nice writing and some interesting characters which made me appreciate reading it, but it's a big investment in time, money and space (assuming you're going for physical copies) so I can't really recommend it. If you enjoy long fantasy series that explore the arthurian myth by adding some cool concepts and a fair bit of adventuring, you'll enjoy it.
PS don't let the first half of the first book throw you off. It starts with a lot of nods to the Fellowship of the Ring but it soon comes to its own. From what I've read it starts of this way simply for familiarity points (LotR clones where all that jazz around that time). By the end of the 1st book you'll also realise this once again, as it has a semi-conclusive ending: he didn't know if he'd get to publish more books so he tried to wrap things up in a way.

>How are the actions scenes in the novels?
Brutal and gory, some of them, without being repulsive. The climax of the Lord of Chaos is probably the best example, it showcases the reality of war without glorifying it I think.

I enjoyed it up through I think the 3rd volume in high school. What really sticks out now is the really fucking weird part about the Seanchan (?) women that put a collar thing on magic using women from the "Western" continent and tortured them with it endlessly to bend them to their will. I remember finding it a little kinky and fascinating but more than that just made me think, along with the other things (horrific female characters in general, cuck male characters) that the author is a real strange guy and I'd had enough of his fantasy world.

I'm on book 4 right now and enjoying it for what it is. I read it at night in bed before I go to sleep and it's perfect for that. I typically read sci-fi/fantasy at night before sleeping because they are light and enjoyable reads. Some of it is a bit too-detailed and over-described but since I'm not going to stop sleeping at night a long series is beneficial.

OP you should stop asking questions and just start reading. If you aren't enjoying it by the end of book 1 it's not for you and you can just stop.

I believe in waiting for it to get good in a few books but I don't want to devote alot of time to a mediocre series that its fan base has fallen to victim to the one piece effect. Where they are now emotionally attached because of their time sink or the grew up with the books but in all reality its total dog shit.

The only people who actually got through it are turbo-autists that think Final Fantasy seven has an "amazing story." It's autism, anon. Imagine the absolutely foul stench of a "game" store and the heavy sweating watery tits of a ponytail neckbeard at the store's daily Magic tournament. That guy, he probably likes these books. And that should tell you something. No, they are not worth your time, just like masturbating to Sonic porn isn't worth your time. There are very few fantasy/sci-fi books that transcend their awful genre, and this series isn't one of them. The people who read this read the name of the wind. The people who read this read Ready Player One. Just think on that a little bit.

Wow I'm on you really kind of summed up my internal intuition very well. I just I kind of assumed it was the case but I figured because it was so long I felt like the author would have just poured a lot of his soul into the books and that would like bring them up but in reality it's just incel propaganda.

The only positive thing I can say about this series is this: I don't regret having read it. But that is mainly because I never regret my choices in life, no matter how ill informed they turn out to be.

Since you are a genre fag, I'll give you my thoughts on the plot and characters, and leave the prose and themes.
>Plot
Jordan very clearly lost control of his own creation early on. The more he wrote, the more he tried to expand the story, and his lack of control left him with multiple storylines that ended up being unnecessary, unsatisfying, needlessly drawn out. He wanted to keep all the main characters engaged while also driving the main conflict towards the end, but in trying to do this, he had to fill their time with random bullshit that you don't even remember a few chapters later. Even the 3 main boys end up having storylines across multiple books that lead nowhere. In short, the plot is generally shitty.
>Characters
There are literally hundreds of named characters in this behemoth of ink and paper, yet the only ones that are close to interesting or relatable are Rand and Moridin. Mat is a fucking meme, and Perrin went to shit after his arc in the Two Rivers ended. All the Wondergirls are irredeemable, with Nynaeve being an occassional exception. Rand is, however, generally well written, despite his autism regarding women.
Do I recommend reading it? I guess you should, if you can be bothered to. It's not particularly good, but then, few things are.
