I've started reading and oftentimes I will finish a book and miss readings and come away with a crude understanding of the novel. How can I improve my analytical skills with regards to literature?

Are there books for this (pic related, I've seen it recommended here?), does it pay to understand common story structure, etc, how do I learn about this? Hoping that one of you nerds who paid to be taught this stuff can point me in the right direction im just a STEMlord

Bump, I have the same experience sometimes.

I generally tend to "solve" that by reading summaries and opinion pieces on the book after finishing it. Maybe this is a better question for >>/lit/ though

"Common story" structure originates in myth, I would say read Adler's book (although the only thing I retained from that book is to frequently write in the margins and to regard a tattered, worn out book as a success), and then check out Ovid's Metamorhoses (I like the Mandelbaum translation). He connects story after story until you forget who's telling what tale. It's a good read and can help with identifying things like exposition and plot elements.

Can you even read? I said I thought I was on /sci/, because I had a tab of /sci/ and a tab of /lit/ open and messed up. I thought OP posted this on /sci/ when I wrote that response, then saw that it was on /lit/. Mistakes happen, ya know.

Gotcha.
I though >>16271136 was OP saying he thought this was /sci/.
