from a christian perspective its very much nebulous. Theres Leviticus 19:19 Ye shall keep my statutes. Thou shalt not let thy cattle gender with a diverse kind: thou shalt not sow thy field with mingled seed: neither shall a garment mingled of linen and woollen come upon thee.
and then theres the whole new testament 'theres neither gentile nor greek before God'
now obviously the leviticus is pretty explicit, and the new testament could be construed as talking chiefly about salvation.
i have also formed this socratic analysis of the subject.

i dont know about specific etymology, but i know that back then they didnt have the idea of "blacks" and "whites" or "germans" and "french" - the idea of identity functioned very different than it does today - on a more tribal and regional basis rather than "national" or "racial", and even as such only religion was important
