Don't get me wrong, I love reading, especially political books like Hobbes' or Plato's, but I know I'll never use the knowledge I get from them because you need a lot of networking to enter the field. It's a feeling of hopelessness like no other, can you please convince me to not give up reading for good?

There is no point to read honestly unless you are working the field for whatever you are reading. It's not worth it and creates no memories and you aren't enjoying life. Do drugs have sex and fun. And on your down time read some philo, it works out better this way m80

I enjoy basketball. I will never play in the NBA: I am too short, too slow, too fat, etc. Does that lessen the pleasure I receive from this sport? No. In the same vein, I write stories for the pleasure doing so gives me. I never plan on publishing them, so is it worthless to do so? No.

In the same vein, you should read because it enriches your world, and because it is something you enjoy. Who cares if you'll never be as good as Kant or Plato? Be you.

Don't read to gain access to any kind of 'field', read out of interest and love for the inquiry itself, it's not about 'use', it's about a higher form of pleasure and satisfaction anon, enjoyed by the higher part of the soul

You will die like a dog, do you still think drowning yourself in pleasure is the path to any form of joy?

>creates no memories
Quite the contrary. The books you read are linked to a space and time in your head. It's basic neuroscience.

Dont give up reading anon!
Reading philosophy expands your mind and encourages you to think more logically and make better judgements in life. That is its usefulness.
Being an academic philosopher is a meme now, especially in the US or UK. Many of them are unironically terrified of their students and of saying or doing the wrong thing and facing cancellation. Also there is tremendous pressure to publish, whether it is shit or not, no-one cares anymore and standards are at rock-bottom.
The real philosophers of the future will be autodidacts.
