I know it's probably quite well known, just overshadowed: Sometimes a Great Notion by Kesey.

Also, I know I'll get shit on, but whatever: Lives of Girls and Women is a great clinic for any aspiring writers on how to develop voice and tone of the characters.

The Sheltering Sky by Paul Bowles certainly qualifies. Great book, but his short stories are even better. Definitely look into him

Is there a good English translation for Scholia to an Implicit Text? I can only find German and Italian ones. I have some Spanish and probably am obsessed with Davila enough to translate it myself once i get the time but just wondering if you knew.

Atlantis the Antediluvian World - Ignatius L. Donnelly. This guy essentially started the whole Atlantis craze, and although modern people call him a quack, you have to give the guy props for his research back in the 1880's. The book is filled with interesting commonalities between a number of different cultures, these commonalities are claimed to be the signs that there was once a global civilization that was wiped out by a catacylsm. It's a fun read.
