it’s comfy and has buttons and warm light which means reading in complete dark with no eye strain

not sure if it’s worth 2x the price of the regular Paperwhite, but if the above mentioned features are important for you then I’d recommend it as a long term investment type of purchase

I hear you can get similar non-Bezos readers cheaper (like Kobo) but it wasn’t an option in my country

in terms of what it supports:
docx, pdf (not it's only the size of an ipad mini so don't read your broadsheet pdfs in here), epub. doesn't seem to cope with djvu from what i remember.

allows you to annotate pdfs directly; or to separately set up a notes page which you can switch between. Has TTS, has the ability to higlhlight text, get dictionary definitions, wikipedia pages and translations whilst reading (you never really do this irl though). can rotate pages, bookmarks the lot

otherwise its just a slow android 6 tablet. has some good light settings.you can side load in other reading softwares but most aren't as good as the indigenous one (except i have a few i like from the nook which are good for dealing with big pdfs becasue their cropping options are more smart than the inbuilt reader).

getting an a4 sized one is essentially like getting a monitor, but even the smaller ones are worth it, because essentially its just a tablet that is really convenient for reaidng on.

I can actually annotate books or make notes, on a park bench. I can use headphones and text-to-speech my book on the bus if its too crowded and then resume reading when it clears out.

I've heard a couple bad things about the newest paperwhite, and I'm very unsure about the glass screen, since it seems completely counterproductive, especially since the e-ink screen is such a big draw.

There'll be at least one more gen (maybe 2) out before I even think about upgrading, but still, if they plan on making them more and more like the kindle fire, I'm worried.

My kindle paperwhite (gen 3) is perfect.

Hi fellow book lovers!

Recently, I've been speaking to a lot of friends and they all share the same sentiment.
The process of selling or giving away books online is not as simple and straightforward as it should be.
As a result, I created a questionnaire to help us readers and I was wondering if you could spare 2 minutes of your time to fill it.
The purpose of this questionnaire is to evaluate how easy and convenient it is for other book readers to sell/give away books.
The questionnaire is completely anonymous and also covers those not looking to sell books.

Please share and leave feedback if you can.
Thank you in advance.
Dash, a fellow book lover

It's terrible to read PDFs on nearly every e-ink reader. The only ones I've used that were any good for PDFs were old Sony ereaders (T1, T2, etc), which would reflow the text in a PDF so you could read it more like a normal ebook, rather than having to zoom in on it like it's a set of images. It was slower than using epubs though, and ate through the battery faster.

I have been loyal to my Kobo Aura HD since 2013. It's the porsche of ereaders and has a ridged back to replicate the feel of a physical book.

it takes like 2 seconds to do the conversion, which compared to the time it takes to actually read a book is so negligible who cares? +you get the amazon collection of books which fills in absolutely all gaps if you can't find a pirated version of something

I've used a kindle keyboard, kindle paperwhite and now kobo clara HD. I like the kobo the best as the backlight can be altered to be more/less orange. The paperwhite doesn't let you alter the backlight and I found the blue tinge of it uncomfortable at night.
I've often asked on /g/ if there are any other decent ones but it always comes back to kindle and kobo being the worthwhile models unless you're going for something niche.

>lost my <1 year old paperwhite when I left it on a flight
Enjoy it Anon. I noticed almost immediately and asked the attendants if I could check for it but they wouldn't let me and made me go through their lost and found which couldn't find it. Fucking budget airlines.

Oh and the people talking about mobi vs epub are retarded. I've pirated 100% of my ebooks (libgen and private trackers like MAM) and both kindle and kobo take the exact same amount of time to add a book via Calibre.

I use a kobo clara HD, works great with calibre, but you can use a kindle if you convert with calibre first anyhow. It's my first one and I'm kinda just testing the waters to see if I'd like to get a better model

Paperwhite 10th gen, using Calibre to manage the library and it’s pretty comfy.
Went with that model because unlike the base Kindle it has a full flat front while the base Kindle has the screen a bit recessed into the frame

There was a phone that had an e-ink screen afaik but it flopped because it’s a gimmick, it’s not practical for everyday use since it’s low resolution, slow refresh (and it doesn’t refresh just parts of the screen, it has to refresh the full page every time a change happens, which is why it’s that slow) and only b/w.

Yes, that’s why it’s preferred for ebook, that and consuming close to 0 battery while displaying something unlike LED screens, an e-ink display only uses power when refreshing the panel but not while displaying, most now offer a backlight option that you can turn on and off to read in darker conditions and even using that is better than let’s say a phone screen because of blue light, its an interesting technology if you have the chance do check it out, it’s the closest you can get to a paper page while keeping the handy side of ebooks
