For a non-native English speaker, how hard is this compared to GR (which I have read in English)?

There's more archaic words and phrasing. Try reading the first sentence, it's one of the hardest in the book.

Try to focus on each clause and figure out where the clause logically belongs.

Damn, 700 pages of this would drive me insane
>the Children, having all upon the Fly, among rhythmic slaps of Batter and Spoon, coax'd and stolen what they might
What exactly does "having all upon the Fly" mean? I don't get /upon/ as a preposition. Is it like on the fly? Meaning they entered, and decided, 'on the fly, to get some snacks while the women are cooking and they usher them to their little room?
It's the only part of the whole scene I don't really get.
