16215572 No.16215572 [Reply] [Original]

Here follows, in no order, my opinion of the stories found within the current edition of the Lit Quarterly. You may notice an absence of criticism. This should come as no surprise. The writings were chosen for their quality.

The Siren: An amusing story. I adored the writing style. It reminded me of Flann O’Brien. However, that is not to say it is an imitation. It is your own.

Out of the Basement and Into the Fire: An alluring piece. Empathy-inducing. I enjoyed it. It would remind you of something you would find in Fitzgerald’s ‘Tales of the Jazz Age’.

Forever Things: A lovely story. Touching. Well written. Particularly the shift from childhood to adulthood in the perspective of the narrator.

Earthset: A peculiar yet interesting story. It makes for active reading and image-forming in the mind’s eye. As a result, however, I was uncertain as to its location. I concluded it was Mars. The imagery of your prose coalesced into vividity as with went on.

Bohai: Your imagery was clear, and your prose possessed striking sentences. A short, yet sweet, story.

The Furrows: A gratifying story. It expressed in brief and crystalline style the ongoing change from tradition to modernity.

A Marvellous Punkah-Wallah: A very enjoyable story. The flow and language went well together. The pacing was perfect. My attention was grasped the entire time. The voice of each character was distinctive, and the setting was amusing.

The Joy of Personal Criticism: A weighed essay which lays the finger on the pulse of present online discourse. Finely articulated. I just wish it would break through the mediocre and commonplace articles which poorly elaborate on the same topic.

The Stars: I had the joy of reading this story before when KMD and I drank and conversed in the City of the Tribes. It is a beautifully written story which possesses substance and provides lasting imagery.

The Ratline: Much like ‘Punkah Wallah’, it was a riveting read. The flow and pacing were good. Informative to boot. I suffered with the character.

The Captain: The brevity of the story is complimented by its setting. An eerie and attractive piece.

I feel I have not written the totality of what I thought about each piece. There is more to be said, though little time for me to express it; I also foolishly closed my browser whilst writing a more extensive review. This will have to suffice, but I do not give you justice, good anons. My apologies. However, it was a pleasure to read each piece. My time was well spent. Keep in use ye'er honed and hallowed nibs! I would like each author to give an insight into the creation of their pieces. Elaboration is always appreciated, and it will be heartily read.

As for the poems, I am not much of an English poet. Therefore, my opinions would be worthless to the poetic class of this board. Each poem, however, was interlaced with strings of silvery prose - at least to my eyes. Perhaps the poets of this board could review their own fellows? I will say I enjoyed 'Ode to a Yellow Begonia' and 'Sweeney in the yewy yew: Schoenberg on the violin' (especially the latter's usage of Buile Shuibhne).
