in fact the entire morality of the story can be seen in Bunny's murder. He was intellectual, had versatile musical interests and its revealed later on that he actually enjoyed socialising with people outside the inner circle. The reader is slowly tricked into rationalising his murder similar to how Henry manipulates others. We're meant to hate him for his mockery of Charles and Carm's romance, Francis' homosexuality, Henry's stoicism. But the fact of the matter is he holds a greater sense of morality than all of them, and purely for sympathetic reasons, we're meant to advocate his death. Bunny is, in the context of the secret history, the evidence that one does not need to read the classics to become a virtuous person. He is the death of politic incorrectness.

My literary dream is to trap myself inside a groundhog day inspired loop that takes place in New York on the day Charlie Rose interviewed Donna Tartt. And, yes, Donna would be the Andie Macdowell. Just imagine tracking her down in the city (that alone would take up the first week), then having eternity to fall in love with her again and again, each day, beginning at 8:3 0am when you meet her in the green room or lobby or wherever and have the perfect compliment or snide remark (after years of practice), and you capture her attention immediately. Then it's off to lunch. Donna agrees to meet you in a highlife café or a jew deli or some such place in Manhattan. The conversation goes flawlessly and, despite the fact you've been repeating the same words for years upon years now, her laughter and smile have you thinking anew, "Am I really this lucky?" Together you and Donna spend the day visiting eclectic book shops and libraries and talking with each other about Homer, (whom by this point you've been studying for years), and Donna expresses how really "gobsmacked" she feels at whom she's chanced at meeting. As is neccessary, the day ends, dwindles down -- but not before you and Donna skate the ice at 30 rock! Donna can't believe how "slick" a skater you are considering where you grew up, but really it's "nothing to write home about," you answer with a dashing laugh. And then comes the best part. The proverbial cherry on top. You fall asleep together, lovingly, warmly -- all but assured the best day of your life is fated not to end, but to repeat itself, forever.

TSH is told as if written by Papen's hand, years after the events. It's not a stretch to interpret this as him being eaten up by guilt, and setting out to both come clean and defend himself. This project overwhelms him, and soon he is revising the entire chain of events all the way back to antiquity.

I think if anything, Tartt was trying to define the true concept of a romantic, and in turn, how understanding the greeks only goes so far as to how the reader has inerpreted them. Especially with the over admiration the group have for Dionysus of all gods (Believed to be Yahweh)

>> No.16222642

I don't literally think DT wrote a secretly postmodern debut. It's heavily based in Brideshead themes, as Ellis' Rules was in Gatsby.

Your interpretation seems sound, however it's been over a decade since I finished it and I refuse to revisit it, it had too great of an impact to let its effect be shored up by a reread.

>> No.16222731

>>16222642
I'm the same way, it's one of those books where every page has really stuck with me. It also reminded me often of moments in friendgroups where I played a bipartisan role like Richard. I've tried my hardest to appreciate greek classics, but it was only until reading TSH that I felt a contextualisation to it all.

I think the most beautiful thing about the book is the transformation of character that Bunny is experiencing, which Richard fails to observe. Whilst the group is so caught up in what it means to get away with murder, and the fervor of the bacchanal, he is having to watch the descent of his friends. I'm not sure if many others here felt it, but you can feel Bunny struggling by the end to keep smiling.

In a way, I think this is what made Henry truly hate Bunny by the end, was that Henry realised in becoming a murderer, he had surrendered his innocence and Bunny was given the most spiritual change, of knowing what it means to actually want to pray for a friend's wellbeing. Julian makes it very clear that he knows how Bunny has changed theologically in small segments.

It's allegorical for how the Romans only became the romans due to their ancestry of the Greeks, with Richard serving as the enlightened modernist who can only study the friendship like a historian studies ancient civilisation.

Your sympathy for Bunny has me reconsidering my declaration, I was too immature on my first reading to not just follow Donna's surface level presentation of Richard's PoV. This. It was a joy to read. I devoured it. However, the narrative always hints at this intellectual discourse and these ideas that consume the characters, or some ancient enacted ritual consisting of degenerate but transcendent experiences but only barely touches upon what they actually are.
