Isn't this picture completely inaccurate? He only drew the gun after the arab drew the knife, and Camus doesn't include anything about the arab putting the knife away. So it should be M. and the arab a couple yards from each other, with the sun behind the arab.

Would it? You clearly didn't read the book very carefully because you don't understand what was happening at the trial or what was going through Mersault's head.
Your first impression is supposed to be that it should be an easy open-and-shut self-defense case. That would be even more obvious to a reader from the time it was written, who would be more acutely aware that this Frenchman in Algeria could get away with that. But he doesn't. Why doesn't he?
You didn't understand the story. You read the words, inserted yourself into it, and became confused when it didn't work out the way it was supposed to, the way it would have for you. Try to think through it again, but this time don't overlook the fact that Mersault is not you.

the whole point is the utter incompatibility of the arab world and its codes and morals with the french world and its codes/morals, with the latter being imposed on the former poorly in the colonial state. meursault is ironically acting fully within the kill-or-be-killed subaltern honor system but in a way that is incompatible with his frenchness. the question we must ask is if the the french way is in fact better and if so is it not justified in annihilating and replacing the local system, if so why has the colony only gone half way
