Don't ask "why are the French all style no substance", ask "why are non-French people, especially Americans, so obsessed with the French who are all style no substance?". The question is far more revealing and embarrassing. Like all country, France also produced writers of great depth, but most people are afraid of the depth. The microcosm and the influence of the ENS is also very damaging to an healthy thought-capable society. The school of the so-called elite of the nation is one of the most vicious machine of conformity there is, I speak knowing several people that went there.

While I have you here, should I bother reading Lacan if I already read Jung?

imagine if you werent raised in anglo culture. For example, you lived in some mongoloid country and you studied mongoloid philosophy. then you were given to read Frege. You would also say something like "ooga booga what is this nonsense, get this shit out of here". It's cultural difference as in different basic notions, different style of wording, different style of philosophizing, etc. Even your adherence to "substance" in texts is such an anglo thing to do.

why is it vicious ? Grandes ecoles are containers for social inbreeding and preserving the jobs of the nomenklatura, we all know this. We re not better than the brits when it comes to this, we re just better at hiding it behind ideals. Whats interesting now is how bad these schools are at shining outside of the francosphere and how they are dealing with globalization of academia, so far its pretty laughable.
