American's are pretty selective as to which teachings of christ they follow.
If I was going to prescribe to a religion I'd go balls deep into it. You're either a christian or you're not.

The state of mind of "being an atheist" isn't really sustainable. Either you realized the Enlightenment was shit and are now some kind of Illiberal religious practitioner (Orthodox Christian, National Socialist, Buddhist, TradCath, Anarcho-Capitalist hellegotist, some kind of schizo syncreticism, etc) or you're still a Liberal who thinks humans are nothing but walking stomach/genital bots. "Atheism" (actually a radical doubt demanding empirical proof of all claims) as such is actually a liminal phase in between Liberalism and Illiberalism. To remain in this liminal phase for longer than is necessary indicates some sort of flaw or defect. Cowardice (too scared to become an Illiberal) or unwiseness (lacking the wisdom to realize that you can't actually demand, or even get, proof for EVERYTHING) are the most common. The collapse of Evangelical Christianity means that there's relatively few people left in a FUCK YOU DAD phase.
