16188551 No.16188551 [Reply] [Original]

Define Sword and Sorcery. What separates it from fantasy?

>> No.16188575

>>16188551
main character is an ubermenshe chad, it's dark and gritty, you will see some titties and scantily clad women.

It's about one man's struggle vs the world rather than a kingdom or nation. It's an inherently anarchist individualist/egoist genre.

>> No.16189096

>>16188575
More egoist than anarchist, moralism is very seldom part of it

>> No.16189105

>>16189096
egoism is usually used in an anarchist context.
moralism is unrelated here and really can't be used to say it's not anarchist.

>> No.16189108

>>16189096
"Morality" though, can be part of it, in a classic "good triumphs evil and receives glory" sort of way.

>> No.16189171

>>16189096
I don't mean anarcho communism or something, I just mean extreme freedom, power of the invididual which is Egoist anarchism or anarcho-egoism

>> No.16189227

>>16188551
>Picaresque as opposed to containing a grand plot
>Psychological as opposed to metaphysical
>Typically more explicit with depictions of sex, violence, slavery, and so on
>Core values are strength and wit of the individual – 'heroic' in the Greek sense
>Settings are chosen based on psychological impact and physical obstacles for the hero, not based on recreating a pastiche of North/West Europe (or in modern epic fantasy, whatever cultural setting is mimicked) – more diverse landscapes, use of jungles and tundras, etc.

>> No.16189832

>>16189096
Wrong. Morals are heavy part of it. Conan, the mascot of the genre, is essentially a noble savage. He has his own code of honor and higher morals than the civilizations he triumphs over

it's more pulpy.
it's more like cowboy in fantasy land rather than epic.

Exactly. Conan saves the world now and again sure. But in frost giants daughter, queen of the black coast, tower of the elephant, people of the black circle etc he's just out on an adventure. He's not the chosen one out to save the hyborean world. He's just doing his thing

As far as I can tell, modern fantasy has basically been boiled down to Game of Thrones.
Maybe give The Witcher series a try? I haven't read it though so I can't really give much input.

You are wrong. Contrasting Conan with the moral degradation caused by civilisation is a recurring theme in the stories.
