Where am I supposed to start with this guy? I’ve heard good things about The Tunnel, should I read anything before that?

Start with On Being Blue and In the Heart of the Heart of the Country to get a feel for his style before jumping into The Tunnel

15 seconds in, Gass mentions "tearing out pages of Herman Wouk"... Lacking any familiarity, except that Wouk won a Pulitzer, does this sound like a slight against Wouk, or putting him in the same league with Gaddis?

Yeah I recommend starting with Omensetter's or these other two. I think they're better than The Tunnel anyway. But if you want to jump into that book just go for it. Realize that the beginning sections are intentionally difficult as a "fuck you" gateway and the entire book is not that strange and hard to read (if you find the beginning hard).

Wouk was good writer, not very fashionable in literary circles though he wrote general readers
