I literally have read thousands of works across all subjects and this is my favorite book of all time.

There's a great deal about both creativity and teamwork.

Who is this alluring jezebel?

It was pretty good, I kind of wish the author had gone into more of the technical details.
It's sad to think that era of game development is gone and never coming back.

Oh hey I'm actually reading that right now.
I don't really read books about "how it was done" type of stuff, just digging the trip back to the past.

Oh yeah? I was just reading about that and replaying doom 1 and 2. What do you like about it?

>> No.16163519

I like how it attempts to formulate the contributions from Carmack and Romero, and if you've ever tried making even a doom wad or any game, the twin challenges of art and technology always loom.

Cool. Ive always been curious about Romero. Ive heard rumors about him but wondered what was true or not. Anyway, I bet that book has more trustworthy info on him id like to know. I did try to make a game. Getting artists to do anything is a pain in the ass.

i really like how the book included the sordid tale of ion storm

>> No.16163806

Masters of Doom really is amazing. Carmack and Romero are truly literary figures, a real yin and yang. Carmack was a robot with no attachments to anything, but was a single-minded genius. Romero was a smart, sentimental guy who just couldn't focus. It's a tragedy. You can say just as easily, Romero should have gotten his shit together as you could say Carmack should've shown a little understanding and tried to talk to him. Together they were unstoppable, but neither could address their primary faults. Even the games they made after reflect it. Doom3 and Rage were technically amazing snoozefests, and Daikatana was a wonderful dreamscape of bad ideas.

I browsed through this for awhile, you can get it for free on the guy's site.

It's a little too technical for me imo, and the guy is an ESL, but there might be some interesting info for you.

Are you kidding? The modern era of indie game development makes it more possible for a group of creatives to make a game than ever before, and for it to be successful.
Also there is a different book that analyzes the Doom engine on a technical level, I found it on libgen once

was it the one in here? >>16163806

Yeah I'm pretty sure.
If the beginning is about how the source code released was for the Linux version, and how the book would consequentially be about that version and not the original DoS version, then I'm certain.
