Because the writer "borrowed" liberally from tons of different sources. And Berserk has changed drastically over the years. It first started out as pretty blatant Sword & Sorcery (hell the first time we see Guts he's sexing up a monster woman just like the scene from Conan the Barbarian). Then it turns into epic fantasy/grimderp and stays that way for a long time. Now it's borderline family friendly litrpg. So no there's not going to be any novels quite like Berserk unless you you break it down by era. Sword & Sorcery era Berserk (which was really only right at the beginning)? There's tons of that you could read. Epic Fantasy/Grimderp era Berserk? Also tons.

It actually works really well because of the circumstances in the book. The character is not themselves (dealing with insanity, misremembering things). Coupled with you knowing what the actual events were in the first book, the 2nd perspective turned out to be a great way to write the mental deterioration of the character from their perspective.

I was apprehensive to it at first, but it turned out well.

I wish my dad knew about this thread. I got a kindle on the same prime account and I looked at the history and there are ~1900 books read. Mostly scifi.
He's probably been down all the rabbit holes, and read a fair bit of self published trash since he likes to read the free complete series of things.
Speaking of, one of the books he told me about was if an alien needed to invade a planet, they needed to use the primitive's technology to do it. So aliens invaded ancient Romans, and you can probably see where that leads considering the incredible discipline of Roman soldiers and the idea that the world DID try to copy them and no one ever matched them when they did that.
Anyway I think the Romans fight them off and maybe even steal a ship or something.

Anybody know what that book is called?

Ranks of Bronze.

They were Roman soldiers—
and they were still alive because there
were no better killers in the galaxy.

The Galactics need fighters who could win battles without the aid of technology. That's why, when Rome's legions suffered disaster at Carrhae, secretive alien traders were waiting to buy them on the Persian slave market.

Now, virtually immortal, the Romans fight strange enemies on stranger worlds; and though they win every battle, the spoils of victory never include freedom. If the legionaries are ever to return to Earth, it must be through the beam weapons and force screens of their ruthless alien owners. But no matter the odds, two thousand years is a long time; the Romans are coming home.

Lud-in-the-mist hit that sweet mischievous mercurial fairy spot that I really love, they were creepy and capricious in all the right ways and the author had commendable prose and turns of phrase. Loved the little tidbits of world building and folk beliefs she intertwined in the story all about fairy lore.

I'm reading it now and while it's certainly great it's no LotR. The number of coincidences is absolutely astonishing. He first ran into the Autarch on his own while completely lost roaming the gigantic palace. This was after coincidentally discovering a hole in the wall of the prison he was in, after erroneously being thrown into the prison for no reason. Then he ran into Agia again in the jungle north of Thrax even though it was massive and essentially uninhabited. Then he ran into the previous ruler of the universe in the same jungle and revived him from some sort of stasis. None of this is planned. Also this is where I'm up to now, I apologise if this is retroactively justified but it seems unlikely.

ATTENTION TO THE ANON WHO SHILLS THE “DEL RAY BOOKS”

Brrooo I tried to get to you on the other thread where the guy was like “aargh the The Complete Chronicles Of Conan: Centenary Edition (Hardback) fckin suuucks something something Conan finds a pawg... etc.”
Anyway I was gonna respond to you being like (imagine I replied to one of your posts in the last thread as follows: [this is if I even find you here, though I have a feeling you might, I know you love your Conan threads you little bastard])
Brooo I’ve been meaning to get to you, and btw you’re very based, but I just need to know... it’s been a few many days since hog posted on the sffg regarding the Conan collections and you were saying how, aside from your obvi fav: the del ray collections, (pic related) allot of the collections including your most despised The Complete Chronicles Of Conan: Centenary Edition (Hardback) are edited to shit.
Anyway brother what I’m trying to get at is brother,,, I’ve already (and unlike the last Conan poster who posted the The Complete Chronicles Of Conan: Centenary Edition [Hardback] Picture, I’m not a faggot and didn’t kill a thread post it) bought it you see :(... I had it even when I asked you all those sffg threads back... this is bad because I don’t (and I completely believe you, remember how I said how based I know you are for your vault of knowledge on these subjects) want to buy a whole new collection. Soooo as I was saying, and tho I’ve seen you mention it off-handedly, I need to know for sure... is thee :The Complete Chronicles Of Conan: Centenary Edition (Hardback) that gayley edited so where I can’t read it? Believe me I know all that’s you’ve said, I’m just asking if it’s cool to read. That’s it. Is it cool if I just fucking read it. You’re the deciding factor, if you tell me straight up, “nah this shits gay I’m litterally telling you not to read it and buy the del ray” I’ll fucking do it bro. But if you’re like whatever bro it’s chill.... brooo. Lmk

Yes it's cool. It's not completely edited to shit or anything like that (though Conanchads did have to put up with edited-to-shit stories for decades); you just won't be getting the full Conan experience as REH originally intended (or the awesome art littered throughout the books). The Del Rey books are just the absolute top tier Conan collection; that doesn't mean other collections are complete dog shit. So you have my blessing to read it and not feel bad.

Harrow the Ninth, The Locked Tomb, #2 - Tamsyn Muir (2020)
This is a work of metafanfiction, which is to say that a significant portion of the novel is fanfiction of itself. This was a problem for me because I have minimal interest in fanfiction. The majority of the novel is told through a second person perspective. It has at least as many memes and pop culture references as the first book. Unfortunately, I felt a lot of them detracted from the experience for me. I dislike it when a book does the same thing to the reader as the characters are going through so that the reader supposedly relates to the characters more. My expectations were too high going into this. I was very confused what to think about it all the way through the end and then even for a while afterwards. I briefly considered rating this as two stars, mostly out of disappointment of how my speculations while reading were a wasted endeavor. The ending wasn't much of a pay-off for me, so I didn't have that as a consolation either. Novelty for the sake of novelty isn't something I usually am able to appreciate. My personal opinion is that Muir was only somewhat less self-destructive* than Harrow with the structuring of this novel. The dialogue seems to be major draw for many, but it wasn't for me. I'll certainly be reading the third, but my expectations have now been appropriately chastened. After finishing this, I found myself reconsidering much in general and not only about this series. That being said, I knew from the start of the first book that I was well outside the target demographic, but it seems I forgot that between books.
Rating: 3/5

*As according to consensus reality this isn't the case based on how much others have enjoyed it and thought it was a wonderful idea.

Metafanfiction is something that may or may not exist, but that's what I'm calling it, similar to how I called The Traitor Baru Cormorant, a "secondary world historical fiction". Explaining entirely would be a major plot spoiler. Though, what do you have trouble with understanding when I say the original is also fanfiction of itself? It's self-referential within the apparent established structure of fanfiction culture.

Sure, for anyone else, these are major spoilers.
Muir has stated that one of the worst things about being an author is that she is unable to read fanfiction of her works for legal reasons. There are several chapters where she writes random absurd scenarios, many using apparent fanfiction tropes. Basically she is writing them as if she were someone else writing fanfiction of her characters and includes that as part of the story.

I read Chapter 1. I enjoyed the premise and I hope you continue to flesh it out. I am sad that there is not a full book to read.

Feed back:
1. I assume there will be some later tie-in with Kennedy's assassination, but I had some trouble believing there already was a moon base in 1963 while the actual moon landing didn't happen until 1969. Of course this is sci-fi, not history. There is a faster than light Kinetic Drive, so the reader has a hint that space development happened more rapidly or started earlier than our timeline. A few more over the course of the story would be nice.

2. I was a little confused if Brody's father was an aeromechanic or a normal mechanic. This may be related to (1).

3. I really enjoyed that this is told from the construction worker side of things. This niche seems to be mostly empty. I get https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moonlight_Mile_(manga) vibes from it.

4. Will Brody and Maksim hatefuck or sabotage each other. I'm not sure, but either way works.

Best Served Cold, First Law World #4 - Joe Abercrombie (2009)
This was much closer to what I thought First Law would be like rather than how the trilogy went. In terms of media I've experienced, I'd describe it as Assassin's Creed + Ocean's 11 + The Expendables. That may have been a problem for those expecting more of the same. Everyone else in the /sffg/ group who wrote a review about it rated it two stars, though the average rating by the group is much higher. There were a few annoyances that prevented me from rating this 5 stars, mostly in terms of character development. Unlike in The Last Argument of Kings I didn't dislike all the major characters by the end, though that didn't prevent me from quite enjoying that book for other reasons. I enjoyed that there was some character overlap with the previous three books. I don't think there are many series where the author has taken the approach of writing standalone books, or other series for that matter, that feature characters from the main series. I've read a few others that have done similarly. I have considerable experience with shared world franchises, so it's something I'm familiar with and have enjoyed.

You'dd think he could do something with that, like having present Kvothe offer commentary on his past actions with the wisdom of hindsight, he NEVER does that though.
The to stories are so separated, they are basically separate people in different worlds
World went to shit, and now Kvothe is sad, I get it (also Satyrs are real). But was the the entire point? Rothfus had no plan, and not appearently not clever enough to utelize his settup

The first book and the first half of the second book are ok. I had no idea what I was getting into when I started The Name Of The Wind and I was actually loving it until Kvothe went to the University. Then it turned into a edgier Harry Potter which was really not what I wanted to read at the time (nothing wrong with HP itself). Still, it was somewhat enjoyable anyway. The second half of A Wise Man's Fear though is a complete trainwreck.

He had a very big debut, people too young to remember when his first book came out don't know how much he was hyped up. He was the rising star of the fantasy world, everybody had huge hopes for his series. His first book had so much promise. The narrative was a classic rags to riches story with some boarding school stuff, plus tons of ancient mysteries. Kvothe throughout the first book is driven to solve the mystery of why his parents were killed, an unravel ancient legends. The book moves at a fairly brisk pace, following Kvothe from early childhood to early adulthood. So people were very eager to see book 2. It took him several years to write it, but people were patient for the new scion of high fantasy.

And then book 2 was very underwhelming. The pacing ground to a halt. Instead of investigating mysteries and learning magic Kvothe learned kung fu, got rich off his brilliant ideas, traveled the world and had sex with the queen of the fairies, who enjoyed it so much she made him a magic cloak knitted out of moonlight (no really). Absolutely nothing is done to advance what most people considered the main plot of the story (accounting for how Kvothe in the past wound up as Kvothe the inkeeper in the present). None of the major plot points dangled in front of us in book 1 were addressed: he didn't kill any kings, he didn't get expelled from the University, he didn't figure out anything about the Chandrian or any of the ancient legends he'd been so interested in during book 1. It was a whole lot of faffing around really, the kind of stuff you'd expect in a side story anthology like "the travels and adventures of kvothe" not something holding up the entire main plot of the second book of one of the most anticipated series from a highly acclaimed author.

And then after this he just stopped writing. He published some poems, some short stories, but who knows how long he was sitting on those? Might've had them saved from when he was in school for all we know. It's been a decade since he published anything to do with the series that made him famous in the first place. And what really makes people salty is that the whole time he's been not finishing his series, he's been living it up like a celebrity author, attending cons and doing Q&As like he's still some kind of bigshot. He acts like an insufferably smug cunt in public, even though his only real claim to fame is writing one book with a lot of promise and then not delivering on it.

The only really tropy part was the University, which is bog standard boarding school narrative stuff. There was a lot in the story that was interesting and captivating to readers of high fantasy in his setting. And in the character of Kvothe too. It's not by any means an original idea to do the story-within-a-story framing device but it was executed well here, and adds a bit of depth to an otherwise straight forward narrative that Rothfuss was clearly conscious of using (at least in book 1).

It's not similar at all. It's a very stupid paper thing comparison. The religious themes are actually built into the story, but you seem kinda dumb, which explains why you'd call them "references".
>It still has to be internally sensical.
It is. Have you stopped to consider people have stakes on Severian? That Agia might be trying to get revenge? That there are some external forces at play? You call them coincidences. As if a dying earth story with one of the most clueless protagonists in the history of SF should make sense to your modern day autism.

You're still proving you don't get it. I never said BoTNS was good, although it is. I'm trying to explain that you seemingly have no knowledge of the parallels involved and are criticizing the book because you don't, or refuse, to understand or look them up. As >>16170890 explains, you're not bothering to think about this. Who would have guessed that Severian encounters the woman trying to get revenge on him. Or that a series with a heavy emphasis on God might have some form of divine intervention, as though God might have some kind of plan. You've gotten past book one, but act like this is all coincidence when it should have been obvious by now that it clearly isn't. That's why you're being mocked anon. Wolfe's writing has layers on layers and you're not even picking up on a single one of them. And then you complain that you don't get it.

You could read stories by other characters REH created: Solomon Kane, Bran Mak Morn, and Kull. Clark Ashton Smith also wrote some S&S stories in his Zothique tales, but they're different from REH's Conan tales; more morbid and dark and less action focused. And there's also all this:

Select stories by Schuyler Hernstrom. He's writing some of the best modern S&S (and Vancian fiction).
Imaro by Charles Saunders.
The Voidal by Adrian Cole.
Rogues of Merth by Robert Zoltan (blatant Fafhrd and Gray Mouser homage, but entertaining).
Fafhrd and Gray Mouser by Fritz Leiber.
Elric by Michael Moorcock.
Gonji by TC Rypel
Berserker trilogy by Robert Holdstock
Far Away & Never by Ramsey Campbell
Bard by Keith Taylor
The Chronicles of Caylen-Tor by Byron Roberts
Bloodsong trilogy by C. Dean Andersson (hesitant recommendation).
The Incompleat Nift by Michael Shea.
Conan: Road of Kings and Legion from the Shadows by Karl Edward Wagner
Conan and the Emerald Lotus by John Hocking

As far as EASING one's way into S&S if all you've ever read is epic fantasy I would suggest the Drenai series by David Gemmell. They're like S&S stories in an epic fantasy framework; if that makes sense. I would personally recommend The First Chronicles of Druss the Legend. It's the closest of the Drenai novels to S&S because each chapter almost feels like a short story.

That being said unless you have a pre-existing medical condition such as immune system weakening conditions chances are you are not gonna even notice that you have the coofs. Thats how it is for most people. Its not really that harmful but highly infectious and many people develop immunities after having it. There was this case in a ski resort town in switzerland where pretty much everyone there got it but no one noticed cause they had no symptoms and no one died from but. They like 80% of the town developed an immunity to it without ever knowing that they had it.
