In 2020, William Stoner would not have been accepted to U. of M. due to affirmative action. He would remain on the farm his whole life, and after an injury moving about hay, he would get addicted to opioids until he finally dies of an overdose and becomes a statistic. In short, it's beautifully written. The style and the content work together to reveal the raw reality of human existence. In Stoner, nothing is exaggerated. There is no pomp and circumstance. To the measure it has an effect, I would say it's method is to remove what has cluttered the readers worldview. It speaks by taking away. Life seen as what is simple and obvious, but a simplicity that leaves the reader with nothing. At least for me it it felt way. It left me in an existential-type mood for weeks. Among the most impactful book I have ever read.
