finite free time, proliferation of screens naturally crowds some things out. not like it really fell off a cliff outside of the 45+

the 45-54s and up dipped hard post-gfc, so i'm expecting thats people who'd otherwise retire no longer being able to do so. work naturally takes up leisure time

Few historically, have ever read for pleasure; most, on the contrary, have read to learn or explore certain concepts in the most direct and refined way available. The industrial revolution changed that: increasing literacy for the masses and allowing the majority to seek forms of entertainment greater than that of playing Jacks. The decreasing number of readers in general could be due to the availability of better forms of entertainment for the masses. These new forms of media cut out that portion of low IQ/non-patrician readers.
It doesn't really matter though, the groups who would have become readers are likely those who would've only consumed Genre-fiction and YA, not those of who would've sought the western cannon and philosophy.
