I don't even like anime if that's what you're thinking. aside from a few exceptional shows that are usually in name alone. Lain is a great work of art, and ever since watching it I've been obsessed by the ideas it presents about the nature of the internet. this train of thought is often a one-way ticket to disappointment, you're better off research and writing something yourself than searching for a niche in fiction, at least in my experience
You should read the short story "Another Pioneer" by DFW if you haven't, its less about the internet and more about an allegory of technology/AI's effect on society

Well you'd want basic buddhism as ontological philosophy. Because most of this is "Jesus whips bankers," "Be nice to cripples," "He magically comes back to life" grade religion.

Consciousness is momentary and disconnected (lain's unstable identity). Identity is instantiation (cf: elite lain hacker early episodes). The only exit from the cycle of death and rebirth is by transcending the momentary inflictions of consciousness as desire, and this is necessarily either bodhisattva or buddha nature. Lain choose boddhisattva because she's a weak cunt like Jesus and chooses to suffer for the rest of us.

Try actually reading Journey to the West and reading each story (parable) as a theory of action and mind rather than as an awesome Kungfu action novel. Or just watch the Japanese transvestite TV series in UK dub (MONKEY!!!) but with an awareness that the demon of the week is a mode of being in suffering.

That said, many people who like Lain are not trannies, but just your plain old pathetic heterosexual weaboos.
