It's marketing. Just like all female authors have covers with flowers even they are scifi writers or some other bullshit

i think it's just bad taste, better-looking books would hardly be bad marketing

When and why did the publishing industry forget how to create appealing covers? Nowadays everything is either r*dditoid minimalism, SAMPLE TEXT spam as seen in OP's pic, or literal stock images and paintings.

publishing is now, and was not always, 90% female. they simply don't know how to do good work. it's not in their genes

i think it's because genres became more specific and now you have to appeal to a particular audience

If I were a cover designer, I'd also use a text only cover for Blood Meridian, but rather in a photograph print of real metal and blood, or burnt wood, depending on the budget. There schouldn't be characters on the cover, nor Western clichés.

call me a vain faggot, if you must, but I hold the opinion that a book should go well with a business casual look

This is very true

New Directions had some amazing covers back in the day. Idk if this is still the case but all my ND books from the 50s-70s have very tasteful covers in relaxed taupe/beige tones
