1612397 No.1612397 [Reply] [Original]

So I've been doing a lot of reading lately

so far I've read:
The Castle
Flowers for Algernon
The Maltese Falcon
Les Miserables
Johnny Got His Gun

and I'm just starting to read Heart of Darkness

anyone got some recommendations on new literature that's got similar taste to those?

only shit I've read that's been written in the past decade is stuff by Tim Dorsey

SORRY BRO, OUTSIDE OF MY SCOPE, DON'T REALLY READ NEW STUFF. HOWEVER, PAUL AUSTER SEEMS TO BE PRETTY PREVALENT IN THE DISCUSSION OF MODERN LITERATURE ON /LIT/.

HOPE I HELPED.

>> No.1612403

I'd try: more Kafka, look at his stories
For something like Les Miserables, The Count of Monte Christo
For Johnny Got His Gun: Slaughterhouse 5, or maybe Catch-22
For Maltese Falcon: The Big Sleep

>> No.1612405

It's not from the last decade, but if you liked Flowers For Algernon try Joe Haldeman's The Forever War.

>> No.1612408

how new do you want?
I have similar taste.
Check out Haruki Murakami. I started with 'Kafka on the Shore'.

>>1612403
I've read Catch-22, just not recently

and I've seen The Big Sleep already, and got a few of the raymond chandler novels, like I said I'd like to see if there was anything newer since I'm not really a frequent library card user or bookstore patron

>>1612408
like within the past 25 years at the most

preferably within the decade though, I just want to see how good modern writers compare to the old ones

SINCE YOU'RE SUCH A NICE GUY, MAYBE YOU CAN HELP ME OUT.

I'VE READ THE THREE MUSKETEERS, TOILERS OF THE SEA, LES MISERABLES, THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO, AND MUSASHI (THIS ONE IS KIND OF THE ODD ONE OF THE GROUP BUT DESERVES TO BE GROUPED).

GOT ANY OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS BASED ON THAT? ALTHOUGH NOT THAT SIMILAR, ALREADY READ DON QUIXOTE AND WAR AND PEACE (THOUGHT THESE MIGHT COME UP FOR YOU)

CHEERS MATE.

So you like kinda "historical fiction" with a lot of story going on?

Try... For something newer, The Tin Drum by Grass. Empire Of The Sun for WW2 stuff.
AND FUCK YEAH JUST REMEMBERED PERFECT FIT
Baudolino AND The Name Of The Rose AND The Island Of The Day Before, in that order, from Umberto Eco

WHEN I FIRST STARTED GETTING INTO LITERATURE MID-YEAR (2010), I THOUGHT THAT THERE WOULD BE SO MANY WORKS OUT THERE THAT I KNEW I'D ENJOY THAT I'D NEVER GET AROUND TO THEM ALL, SO I DECIDED TO TRY TO LIMIT MYSELF TO WHAT I KNOW I'D APPRECIATE AND ENJOY. LIMITING MYSELF PRE WW-II HELPED THAT OUT, AND I THOUGHT THAT THERE'D BE SO MANY GREAT WORKS BY MEN THAT I NEEDN'T BOTHER WITH WORKS BY WOMEN.

I WILL PROBABLY EDGE INTO THE 50'S LATE THIS YEAR OR EARLY NEXT YEAR, REALLY DEPENDS.
