In general, though - *even though Voltaire would turn over in his grave to hear this* - you can draw a very direct line between stoicism and Candide. There are things that are under your control, and things that are outside of your control. Those that are within your control you can tend to, and those that are outside of it you cannot. The cultivation of your own garden is the cultivation of your soul. The power we have over the world is finite, and we must use it to make that which we have power over good. That is what he meant: whether Panglos was right or not (clearly he was not!) is immaterial, the only thing that we can do is to tend to our own plants, in our own garden. The world may be made of a law of order, or random atoms, but it does not matter in the end! All that matters is that we tend as best we can to that which is truly ours.
