If you are religious and understand that the spirit is unlimited and yet existence is limited and painful, why would you not seek to escape the limitation of existence? Are their any books that counter this feeling? It makes perfect sense to me, gnosticism is surely right.

Given that Gnosticism is so similar to Hinduism and Buddhism in this respect, how possible is it that Gnosticism was the true teaching of Christ?

To be one is to be limited.
To be defined in anyway is to be limited, including 'unlimited'.

That's just the standard religious point of view. This world is shit, and there is a better wold which is not shit, so you should aim for the later. Makes perfect sense given the premises.

I personally do not believe existence in the broadest sense in limited. I believe consciousness itself is existence. But Gnostics divide humans like Paul and Plato did -- body, soul and spirit. To me this is kind of complex and does not help to understand things too much. Buddhists unify soul and spirit somehow because there's no heaven or whatever.

I strongly recommend reading Zen. They teach against escaping the world. Instead, they teach living in this world with a higher level of consciousness -- and this should help you to attain satori and escape rebirth. I do believe Gnostics got to this level of understanding later on, but we don't have textual evidence to prove it.

If he got killed in just three years of ministry, it's because his teachings were way more abrasive to the elite than what we have in the New Testament. In the Gospel of Thomas, we have a Jesus that is very close to an Eastern master.

Why would it not be? Some of the Gnostic Gospels date to the time of the "canonical" Gospels. John has Gnostic themes as well.

Good point.

Mods will delete this like the other Gnostic threads though.

Is it? On my Gnostic readings, the soul is trapped along with luminous shards which are just very small fractions of the spirit. Your spirit is in the Pleroma. You liberate the soul and the small specs of light along with it and unite it with the spirit above. Buddha says nirvana is the union with the oneness through silence or vipassana. If think it's the same method with different jargon.

I think therefore I am. The only thing you can imperially prove is yourself. You have to assume that your senses and memory are accidentally depicting the world in an empirical manner. Now Kant allegedly proves the existence of an objective empirical reality but I haven’t read him yet so I don’t feel comfortable discussing his ideas.
On the other hand it’s widely accepted that human memory is fallible and the ways we experience’’reality” can be affected by various chemicals and mindsets. The cornerstone of quantum mechanics is that you can not empirically describe subatomic particles and the behavior of these particles are effected by the very action of being observed.
I am very ignorant of these topics but to me those implications are interesting.
Who’s to say that you aren’t currently in your 80s on some Alzheimer’s ward living out reconstructed memories?

wrong. your spirit is everywhere. The pleroma is where it was born.

Spirit is like a mediator between your conscious and subcoscious. It allows you to interpret energies and find raw knowledge. Gnosticism is ok, but it makes the demiurge the main culprit. That's like getting bullied by your middle school classmates for thinking different. Doesn't help anybody. Look within.

wow just wow, literally u have no idea what hte conscious and sub conscious is. read some freud, THEN jung, and then we can have this talk. its conscious and unconscious the subconscious is a pop sci term, but was originally aligned with frueds pre conscious which was the common ground between unconscious and conscious, ie the material about to enter through dreams, slips of tongue, visions, daydreams, etc.
at any rate ill answer your question, even though you have zero clue what youre talking about.
the world is pain and suffering, he who increases knowledge increases suffering, all is meaninglessness and wholly vanity under the sun. this nihilism is not something unknown to christianity it is a central tenent. then why are we not a suicide cult. the preacher goes further and says to enjoy the gifts that God has given to you, because you earn nothing under the sun, namely food and water, and to enjoy the fruit of your labors.
peter then says that he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin (not entirely but at that moment)
but know not to be depressed and begrudge your lot and to look to the patriarch Job and how he handled his fall, with grace and faith, and dignity and temperance. sure he did erupt every once in a while but he never lost sight of what was truly important. also
