I read the book back in 2016 because it was assigned reading for SJW libcucks like myself. It's pretty short and didn't stick out in my memory, but the gist is that because the institution of slavery was so deeply ingrained in American way of life, whenever black people begin to get social power it really pisses off white people and they react super strongly. Because whites were/are the dominant racial group, the increased protections or powers given to minorities intrinsically means they're either able to interact with white people as approximate peers or are protected from getting fucked with by whites. So white people lash out because their social power is diminishing. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's the same kind of "sacrifice of power" as any other social contract meme, but it freaks people out and they get uneasy. People are also afraid that when blacks have enough social power they will use it to decimate and punish whites out of revenge. So that's why there's white rage.

Well the 'social power' is never 'treat blacks equally', it's always stuff like affirmative action that treats them unequally just in the opposite direction. Or the current situation in which one race is allowed to criticize the other but not vice versa.

It is these things which people find unfair, that's not the same thing as white people disliking that they are losing 'social power' because it is not creating an equal playing field, it is tilting it.

It also makes people further suspect that blacks are not equal if they need to be treated this way.

Some whites believe that neoliberalism is a pareto efficient outcome so that any improvement of black living standards will come at the cost of white living standards. Blacks have equal opportunity, so it's said, so that the current distribution of power and earnings is rational. Any money fo 'programmes' or affirmative action is picking the pocket of white taxpayers to raise up blacks.

If we're to get over the racial tensions in the US we need to actually understand and refute this naive view, not entrench it by mindlessly screaming racist etc.

For instance, replacement migration in the UK (my country) is seen as unquestionable. The immigrants will pay for social care & pensions for the old, and any racial tension needs to simply be ironed out by Mi5, home office, and 'community programmes'. The problem is that the entire debate is centred on racism, and not on the fact that countries with a more heterogeneous population have lower state spending due to reduction in tax morale. If you have no social unity, then there is no willingness to pay tax, leading to low tax govts. The simple fact is that BAME / immigrants will not pay taxes to look after old white people. So the entire rationale for replacement migration collapses. Few policy analysts care to discuss this because, like with race in the US, it's become a culture war issue detached from reality.

Racial essentialism is the worst academic trend of the past few years and I believe that's entirely intentional.
The idea of 'whiteness' has existed academically since at least the 60s with writers like Theodore Allen, but it's made clear that the 'white race' of homogenized European identities within America is a clear social construct used to keep poor whites from revolting. A petit bourgeois that gains little material benefit other than being better off than literal farm animals. I don't think intersectional ideology or race theory is some inherently useless field. When given proper material analysis, the intersection between race and class is made clear. Racial essentialism perpetuated by white guilt grifters is setting back race relations, and that is entirely the point. They want to live in a world where black people have no agency yet also don't conform to a collective societal whole, while everything negative said about white people is true essentially, that we are rotten to the core and all of our behavior has agency attached to it, regardless of any outside circumstances. You can't have it both ways where black people are affected exclusively by material conditions, yet white people behave the way they do because they are essentially a certain way. Anything to keep poor blacks and whites from realizing they suffer from the same problems.
It all just makes me want to take the grillpill and give up
