One of my favorite books in my collection is this bad boy right here. Both Alice books are brilliant.

I have to disagree with that. It was one of the earliest books written specifically for children. It was pretty much a contributor to the birth of a genre.

>> No.1608601

I find Victorian literature incredibly boring but that's my opinion. 2 pages setting a scene just puts me in a coma.

I once had a literature tutor who argued until she was blue in the face that I thought Victorian writers were "shit" when in fact, I was arguing "They were not shit writers, I just don't like their style."

Leading into a genre doesn't make a book good. You could read something and think "Wow, that was horrible, but I think I'd like to try writing something for children that doesn't harm their mental faculties."

1) Alice is the shit.

2) Victorian writers were hilariously melodramatic.

>Indeed, according to one popular story that Dodgson denied decades later, Queen Victoria herself enjoyed Alice In Wonderland so much that she suggested he dedicate his next book to her, and was accordingly presented with his next work, a scholarly mathematical volume entitled An Elementary Treatise on Determinants.

I really like the Alice books. I did an analysis paper of an unrequited romantic relationship between Alice Liddel & Carroll. If you read it from the standpoint of a man who is in love with Alice as a girl & doesn't want her to grow up, the book can be incredibly dark & sad.

I really dig some Victorian Poetry. Tennyson, Robert Browning, Hopkins, and Hardy are all God-tier.

Haven't read any of their novels aside from Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre in high school (don't remember much about them.) I'll probably read Jude the Obscure sometime soon, and then more of Hardy's stuff if it's any good.
