What are the best books for a layman’s understanding of Socialism?

Right now I’m agnostic on the issue, and am looking to become more educated so I can decide whether or not it’s for me.

It depends what you mean by socialism obviously.
If you want to stay largely in the bounds of mainstream neoclassical economics there's the Lange model:

Lots of good samples from early theorists in this book.
For fiction I liked William Morris’ News from Nowhere

Some balanced introductory treatments:

Roads to Freedom: Socialism, Anarchism and Syndicalism by Bertrand Russell
Socialism: Utopian and Scientific by Friedrich Engels
Capitalism, Socialism, and Democracy by Joseph A. Schumpeter
