Why is there so much negative backlash directed at the French continentals?

>> No.16080637

A horror overwhelmed me, because I thought of the objects that always want to absorb me; how I destroy the objects through my symbolism, and how everything exists only in destruction. Here I saw a justification for all aesthetics; but at the same time I saw that I had to deny the individual, since I no longer saw a whole final purpose. I longed for madness, but it frightened my last unrestrained rest of humanity to the utmost. My only salvation seemed to be a respectable boredom; but not in order to use it like the cheerful Schopenhauer to trick myself into a system; although I realized that a style factor of the first order was latent in boredom. I leafed through some mathematics books, and it gave me great pleasure to jump around with infinity, like children with balls and hoops. Here I did not believe that I was standing in any Crossing-Over-Into-Things, I realized that I was within myself.

I realized that it was wrong to call me a poet; that in art I always remain intoxicated by symbols. It was by no means enough for me that the technique of poetry was symbolic, and that its objects thus acquired a completely different meaning; I still found that linguistic representation was just impure art, measured against music. I cursed the efforts of scientists to trace music back to real physiological processes. But it touched me in a decidedly pleasant way that they interpreted their digestion, but avoided anything artistic with great confidence. I was pleased to see how an old opinion was confirmed here that the parts did not say anything about the whole, that the synthetic was the unconscious prerequisite in logical analysis, and that the main thing was thus safely avoided, as these psychologists were doing.

The most successful people in capitalism have been shown to be people in stable marriages who attend religious services. It's not capitalism's fault that your parents got divorced, kid. It's your own fault because you were a bad son.
