Kindle for 90 / 110 usd (inobtrusive ads, you can get removed by begging Amazon / no ads), Paperwhite for 120 / 150 (ads / no ads). The backlight on the PW is very useful.

About 2/3 of the ebooks you'll find online will be in EPUB. If you're too lazy or don't want to bother in converting them to the appropriate format (with Calibre, other softwares or websites) check Kobo which have native EPUB support. They sell for almost the same money.

Enter the Kobo fags.

i got a refurbished basic Kindle for $60. it was supposed to have ads but came with them disabled. highly recommended. everyone will tell you to get the Paperwhite but i looked at that and a basic side-by-side and didn't see the difference. wasn't worth the price difference for me.

Seems like you missed the point. Dark room = 100% unlit room. You can't read on a normal Kindle on the dark, unless you have inhuman night vision (which you don't) or got one of those clip-on LED lights
people used on airplanes. Since the PW is backlight, you don't need to turn on a table light, and it's easier on the eyes on low-lit spaces, like reading on a bus at night.
And btw, you bought a used/refurbished Kindle off the aftermarket. Going by your dumb logic, you could've bought a PW for a few extra bucks, but yeah, good for you, you totally "showed" them.

Fair enough, I didn't know you could sideload fonts onto Kindle.

Still, I'm not seeing the Kindle advantage here. Yes, I can spend more money to get the higher end Kindle, which has the missing features that the mid-range/low end Kobo has, but that would be an unfair comparison. We should be comparing the Kindle Oasis to the Kobo Forma. I can't speak for either I've never used either.
You also haven't pointed out a single specific reason why the Kindle is better. Just give me ONE reason why you like it more. I'm not trying to be argumentative I'm genuinely curious

Not that guy, but I only went with Bezos for a few reasons -- you can call Amazon and they'll bend over backwards to get the ads off for you for free in 2 minutes by telling them the ads are offensive or irrelevant it obtrusive or whatever excuse you want. If it breaks or has issues, they'll bend over backwards to get you another. And for my own anecdote, I was choosing between the Kindle Oasis and Kobo Forma. I liked the larger size of the Forma, except it turns out Kobo cheaped out on the lights for their most expensive product. Essentially, the lights have a low enough refresh rate that ever using the frontlight on it can cause similar eyestrain to that of reading on a phone/laptop/whatever other screen. The alternative is to never use the frontlight. If that's the case, why the FUCK would I pay so much for this thing?
In closing, Bezos will have his drones make sure I'm happy when I'm consooming, and will probably get my stuff to me super quick in the event it breaks without a lot of the hassle of RMA processes typical of most companies, and he didn't cheap out on his most expensive fucking product. Apparently all the other Kobos don't have the problem the Forma does. Search the lighting issue on jewtube. And in exchange, I click literally 2 buttons on calibre to get my ebooks to be azw3 or mobi format.

Not the person, however, I opted for the Kindle just because of the many comments I read online about the varying quality control checks on the Kobo. I didn’t want to spend good money just to receive screen flickering and dead pixels albeit my Kindle did come with a few minor dead pixels. Also I tend to highlight a lot and read the Kindle was more responsive in that regards. Shame it is by Amazon but I tried to minimize the spyware by never connecting to WiFi, which in turn never enables the ads
