I find it interesting how Ishmael (Melville?) seems to love both whales and whaling. The description of the mother whales with their calves as they sale through Malacca is beautiful. Then they go kill a bunch. There's also a discourse on whales being hunted to extinction, which he ends by just dismissing it cause big sea lotsa fish.

Both of you make good points. Ahab is, essentially, angry at God, because he views Moby-Dick as an instrument of God's cruelty towards him. Remember, Starbuck calls the whale "a dumb brute," which Ahab does not dispute. It's not Moby-Dick, itself, that Ahab really wants to hurt. Ahab wants to hurt God THROUGH Moby-Dick, by wreaking vengeance on God's creation--and more than that, on the whale, the most majestic and mighty of God's creatures. Ahab would really love to kill God, but he can't, so he wants to kill the next best thing.

In this way Ahab is a demonic/Satanic figure, at least past a certain point in the novel. Remember when he gets his special harpoon made and "baptizes" it in the blood of his pagan harpooners, claiming, in Latin, that he's baptizing the harpoon in the name of the Devil.
