Whats the best edition of Paradise Lost?

>> No.16063955

All the translations are good in my experience. They all accurately convey what Milton was writing in the original language.

Is this worth reading? I’ going to buy some books tonight, and I’m looking for some starting pieces. I haven’t read anything past textbooks in years.

English is my first language. I just got a copy with really terrible formatting and pictures of lincoln slapped in random places. Which publisher prints it best?

The Fowler edition is best if juicy footnotes are what you're after.

The Lewalski edition is nice for using the original language--almost every other version modernizes the English.

As a starting piece, probably not. Milton's English is end level due to his Latin syntax.

>Is this worth reading?

Read this aloud (try to keep the rhythm by slapping your thigh):

>He spake: and to confirm his words, out-flew
>Millions of flaming swords, drawn from the thighs
>Of mighty Cherubim; the sudden blaze
>Far round illumin'd hell: highly they rag'd
>Against the Highest, and fierce with grasped Arms
>Clash'd on thir sounding Shields the din of war,
>Hurling defiance toward the Vault of Heav'n.

Does it sound cool?

Oh. I'm actually ESL.
>>16064023
Sure. It sounds like some kind of High Plane Cosmic War or something. I put on a deep, boooooooming voice and read it as if I was a wizard telling the story to some new recruits. I don't understand what you mean by the rhythm though. Is the whole book like that, akin to a poen instead of prose?

Yeah. It's all like that

>I don't understand what you mean by the rhythm though.
There's a rolling beat to it. It gives it a hypnotic quality.

Oh, I see it. I followed a different kind of beat, but that works as well. I suppose I'll get the translated version, and if I like it enough I'll get some hardcover/special edition in the original English somewhere down the line. Thanks anon!
