Hey /lit/

Wondering if you could give me some pointers.

What is the best way to come up with a fictional story from scratch? Be it the form of a novel, short story, screenplay, or whatever.

Where do you start?

No no no no, this is how writing works.
Steal the plot. Do it. Do it now and do it quickly before someone catches you. Go.

>> No.1605983

Well I know that everything has been done and that its essentially impossible to be truly, 100 percent original. But is blatantly stealing that only way to get started? Shit.

Drink lots, take drugs, fall off your bike, get into fights, acquire scars both physical, and emotional (add mental scars to taste, but don't overdo it - no point going all Emily Dickinson). Chase women, travel, fight a tiger, I don't know. Of course, hundreds of writers have done none of these things (Emily Dickinson, again).

There's a reason why there aren't so many teenage writers as their are rockstars - acquiring interesting things to write about is a question of experience, oftenas not.

For ideas, read a lot, listen to people, look for stories in everything. Read things that are outside your usual areas, stuff you wouldn't normally read. It's amazing how totally unrelated shit can come together when you've got enough stuff in the memory bank.

The truth is that if you have ideas, then you have them. You actually can't stop them, till you've got notebooks full of shit, and not enough time in one human's lifetime to realise them all. This is the same if you're a writer, musician, architect, whateverthefuck. Ideas come to people who have ideas.

For me it starts usually with a scene, just a vague imagining of a situation; usually as simple as people and a happening. If it's interesting, I expand the situation in whatever ways I can to make it more interesting; usually the people grow deeper and I imagine what could result from the situation. And it just follows from there.

You're probably being sarcastic, but I'll add a coda anyway: WRITE.

The other truth about writers is that they wrire, all the time. There always comes a time when the notetaking and the research stops, often so do the drugs and the booze, and the writer fucks off somewhere and just writes.

But before you get the liberty to do this, you have to just write all the time - if you don't write at least a couple of thousand words a day, you're not a writer (that's prose - it's different if you're a poet).

Writers write. End of. The number of people who've said to me "I'm thinking of writing a novel". Grrr.
