Not based. He wrote his first three books completely sober (other than your normal coffee, cigs, and “get drunk at night” working-class approach to substances), and these are his only works of value (and really only his first two if we want to be actual critics and not ahistorical, pussyfooting apologists and public servants). By the time he was bloated enough to do nothing but write with the reasonable expectation of always getting published, he was pretty much done for. Drugs were obviously a coping mechanism, as he readily admits in his own autobiographical works. If you want to admire an author’s virility under the weight of substance abuse, look at Malcolm Lowry. Imagine producing something like Under the Volcano while blitzed out of your mind.

I lost all sympathy for him with the amount of hatred and vitriol he spewed out towards the driver for years and years afterwards. Probably still does it today. Absolutely no concept of forgiveness. He's a really hateful boomer, and you can kind of see where the drugs slotted into his life.

I disagree. The greatest King novel is clearly Dolores Claiborne, because it was written from the edge of a cliff and finished halfway down, as a love letter to a dead mother. The rest of his work is trite, formulaic, and easy to anticipate within, but Claiborne gives a fairly decent semblance of humanity to his normally systematic, robotic work.

Don't ever let this troglodyte ridden board convince you that drugs had any contribution to this mans work ethic or creativity. Since day ONE King was emotionally traumatized by both his fathers abandonment and lived thinking his mother would leave them next. He was psychologically crippled by deep anxities and fears of all kinds of perils, from normal to bizzare in nature. Clowns, toilets, animals, didn't matter. The only remedy for him personally was writing, and that is how he would detoxify his psyche, it was thoroughly an obsession. This is the type of brain chemistry you cant teach but only gain from experience. All these morons who tell you that drugs somehow dump all these intricate plot lines and interactions are literal biological wastes trying to run thier own clock and ruin yours while theyre at it.
