Anyone else not go to high school? I don't have any of the experiences or dramas or anything. No priss, no promos, no prom. I dropped out before 9th grade started and took the GED when I was 17 a few years later. I still went to college and am pretty successful these days but I'm alone. I usually change the subject when high school stories come up. I didn't have any friends in walking distance and always felt inconvenience arranging for friends to come over in grade school which I feel was the main reason I never felt a reason to be a part of anything.

That's an outstanding list — I take it you aren't American??
I read 1984, To Kill A Mockingbird, Animal Farm, Fahrenheit 451, Of Mice and Men, Lord of the Flies and The Great Gatsby. We also "read" Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet — by "read", I mean that we had to sit at our desks with textbooks open while the teacher blasted an audiobook recording from a boombox at the front of the room. Come to think of it, this was the case for Of Mice and Men as well. Many of the other books were read aloud, taking turns as a class; it's a very bad way to read books.
I'd have killed to read Crime and Punishment back then. It would have been nice to have been made to read at least one non-Anglo book in high school.

I do, yeah. I probably socialized more in my 8th and 9th grade english classes than the rest of my life combined. In those classes, it felt like people were similar to me, so I was outgoing and joked around a lot. The result was that I gained a lot of acquaintances, and girls began talking to me for the first time in my life. After that though I got depressed and everything went to shit. His readings were great. Had us actually read F Scott and not just throw GG at us and yell about symbolism. Also made us watch both the movies and compare the plots of all three. Skipped The Catcher in the Rye because it was boring bullshit.

I handed my last paper in to him a month late because I was depressed and suicidal. It was an eight page analysis of Norwegian Wood as a discussion of post-war Japanese Society and the changing roles of women and men. >House on Mango Street
fuck, that was some awful time.
I remember my buddy and I once read Catch-22 after we read A Farewell to Arms. Both of us liked it immensely, especially more than Hemingway and we asked our teacher why we didn't read it in class.
>We used to assign it, but people complained it was too confusing and they didn't get it.
This was an honors class.

It's a shit book, and I'm not even joking or memeing. It reads like the average girl's diary, so there's precious little plot, and it's completely self centered. It's kind of like a dumber version of the first part of 'The Sound and the Fury' in the way a retard in narrating things and you have to sometimes take context clues to figure it out. The chapter where she's gang-raped is her blaming her friend for leaving her alone and she keeps repeating 'Sally you lied'. Ask an autist what they did that day and you'll get a more cohesive and fulfilling story.
'House on Mango Street' is one of the most pointless and meandering books ever written. The two most memorable parts are the rape and how her friend Sally marries a vacuum cleaner salesman much older than her to escape her father.
But, since the author/main character is latino and a women, it's a double whammy of minority and feminism. Combined with the fact that it's a 'coming of age' book all but guarantees it's place in the American literature curriculum.

I'd like to repeat high school, not because I liked it but because I regret being such a mean, petty shit to so many people who showed me kindness.

I remember when I surprised my English teacher by taking my head off the desk long enough to break down the symbolism in some William Carlos Williams poem, and from then on he and this other teacher tried to get me to come to school consistently, not sleep through classes, do my homework. Because of them, I was able to make it to graduation off the back of my test scores and some willful ignorance from the counselor, but I'll never forget the last thing that guy said to me, at graduation: "You should've been valedictorian. You're the biggest disappointment I've ever had in my classroom." He was right, and I knew it then, but I've never been able to stop disappointing the people cared about me.

Sorry for the blogpost.

It's a weird feeling because on one hand I remember being absolutely miserable and suicidal in middle and high school but at the same time I wish I could go back and pick up on the things I didn't learn, in terms of soft skills.
I've always avoided people and never talked to anyone, and now that I'm adult I litrelly cannot speak to anyone. I couldn't do that in school either but in school setting I had opportunities to fix it. Although I never talked to people because being around them is physically painful to me, and I remember that was already the case back then.
What I miss was the feeling of "things will get better one day, I'll grow out of it" that I don't have anymore. This is who I am and there is no changing it.

I'm dumb and hardworking and I have a horrible life, because in school all I did was study and study and study, never missed a class, never missed an assignment and had below average grades. After essential Shakespearce (R&J, Hamlet), the only readings of value were the self-directed project ones: Thurber Carnival, Crime and Punishment and probably a few others that I forget. In my Crime and Punishment essay which I banged out as an all-nighter, I used the word "trichotomy" to indicate three aspects of something something, I wasn't quite aware that it was a word but I felt it conveyed the idea well enough. Teacher was very impressed. I even had an Ivan Albright picture as a frontispiece which I thought was germane.

From year 10 onward I rarely if ever showed up. Ended up dropping out in year 11 due to some bullshit 7 absences rule where if you have 7 unexplained absences it's an automatic fail. I was passing all of my classes purely on test results, I also rarely if ever did assignments, but nope, don't show up and you fail. Faggots.
My mum would leave before me in the morning, so skipping was usually easy, but some days she would start late and it became more of a challenge.
One time I took the bus to school, hung around for a while in front of the school, then took the bus back home.
Another time I said bye to her, walked out the door, waited a few seconds, took my shoes off, and crept back upstairs to my room. I grabbed a pillow and a blanket then slept under my bed. An hour or two later my mum got a call that I wasn't at school so she came into my room, looked around for a few seconds, and left. It was exhilarating.
I wasn't even bullied, either, I just really fucking hated school.

It was honestly rather fun seeing how far you could bullshit the diversity worship in public school literature. I had a sort of contest with one of my friends about who could state the most patent nonsense and convincingly argue it to the teacher. At one point, we read some forgettable poem in my AP English course, and when asked to interpret it I decided to argue that it was about the holocaust. Upon being told that it was written in 1915, I continued to argue that it was about the holocaust, and that being written decades before didn't matter, because something something death of the author, eternal themes, atrocity that transcends time and space etc. The teacher was so impressed she repeated the interpretation to the next session that day, at which point my friend both knew that it had been me, and that I had won.

The books we read in high school were mostly fine, but in middle school I remember being assigned this book about a Salvadorian family sneaking into America through Mexico that was literal pro-illegal immigration propaganda. How is shit like that able to slip through in taxpayer-funded institutions? I didn't realize how fucked it was until I graduated and remembered it. One of the most embarassing things is when a man or woman talk about high school as their fondest memories. Imagine thinking the years where boys and girls going through puberty wanting to fuck anything, getting 'wasted' and getting involved with petty drama was the peak of your life.
I sure do have those memories but I would never want to go back.
However for most men and women especially I can understand why it was their peak, as usually they less sexually active and have settled down with just one guy.
