>decided to try writing a book
>worked on it over several months, was fairly happy with it
>finally finished it at about 100k words
>leave it for a month to settle so i can come back to it for the dreaded edit with a clear mind
>a month later
>re-read my book
>the prose is terrible
>the characters are weak and two dimensional
>the plot is predictable
>the pacing is all over the place
>the dialogue is stilted and mostly expository
>the setting is cliche
>literally feel suicidal reading through this hackneyed pile of garbage in the face of thousands of years of literary tradition

is this what being an author is like

You will always ultimately feel that your work sucks. It’s just that you come back to the work until you feel like you can’t change a thing before you put it out there. Then, you get surprised if people like it
Same as it ever was

almost all first drafts are just trash, and that's okay. they're allowed to be trash when they're first drafts, as long as they become less trash over progressive edits. the only thing that's not allowed to be trash is published.

Yes, first draft is always trash. A book only becomes readable after many iterations.
