First two hundred pages are literally town history and character introductions.

I've tried to read it twice but didn't make it past 100 pages. The writing just puts me off and sometimes I'm confused by the russian names.

the whole stepanovich introduction can seem boring and dragget out but once le anarchistman and kirilov gets introduced shit really picks up

Is that just par for the course with Dosto? I'm reading Brother's Karamazov right now and I think he finished with introductions but it still feels like he hasn't really gotten to the meat of the story. For reference I'm at the meeting with Elder Zosima.

i dont understand how people find it boring. it's hilarious, and is a set up for probably the funniest character in 19th century russian lit (the esteemed stepan trofimovich).

Poor stepan trofimovich!

He does tend to take time to get exciting but Demons is easily the worst of the bunch. If you want action right away read Crime and Punishment

Its not until like halfway through where where we get info about Stavrogin and Verhovenskys nihilist shenanigans. The first 200 pages are literally just describing the setting. It gets way more interesting after that.

Its anti-nihilist, not anti-communist.

>> No.16009602

>>16008871
Its the greatest exploration of the psychology of nihilism in literature and is easily on par with Brothers Karamazov.

>> No.16009647

>>16009602
i wasnt talking about demons. and i'm skeptical about claiming it's the greatest exploration of nihilism. the stavrogin appendix is a little exaggerated for my tastes, the theme is explored in a lot more of a nuanced and beautiful way in TBK through ivan and smerdyakov. while Demons' worth as a journalistic piece critiquing the radical forces and ideological infection that led to the propogation of revolutionary ideas which bore fruit in the early 20th century is absolutely undeniable, this was done through a trade-off with narrative fluency and coherency. dostoyevsky himself in his letters expressed dismay that he may have set himself an artistic idea he was incapable of fulfilling. he did a very very good job of it but demons is disjointed compared to the other major novels, overall less compelling. the canvas is very broad, and dostoyevsky doesn't have the ability of tolstoy to spin as many plates. at the end of the day demons is a comedy and farce, people who only perceive its admittedly dark serious side aren't using all of their brain

>> No.16009660

>>16009602
(and if you actually were referring to humiliated and insulted, a possibility i perhaps hastily discounted, then that's hilarious. that book is genuinely just something dosto pumped out to make some roubles and make himself a name again on the literary scene by taking advantage of the most popular ideas in literature at the time - melodrama, unrequited love, and a big bad villian with little depth. one who reads it with a critical eye will not fail to conclude he spent a lot less time and artistic energy on it than his other works: it is philosophically lightweight.)
