Exhalation - Ted Chiang (2019)
Reduced from discord posts.

The Merchant and the Alchemist's Gate
The ideas are fine but that's about all.

Exhalation
It was quite an interesting story and I liked it. It says one of its inspirations was PKD's The Electric Ant, which I also liked. I like self-examination in general.

What's Expected of Us
An enjoyable and amusing story. What's the difference between a Calvinist and a hard determinist? Semantics. Would people react like this though? I don't know. It wouldn't make any difference at all to me. Now, if we could see everything that is going to happen and still be forced to go through with it? That would be annoying. I remember reading another story where scientists proved that almost all people were philosophical zombies. That was amusing as well.

The Lifecycle of Software Objects
I didn't like it.

Dacey's Patent Automatic Nanny
Silly and meh. Robots as rearers almost never work out well. Lack of human touch is a real problem.

The Great Silence
Nobody here but us birds. Unenjoyable.

The Truth of Fact, The Truth of Feelings.
I don't think I'd use Remem. I think I'd get stuck in the past. It wouldn't be good for me or a lot of other people.
My past is an ever receding horizon and I don't know if I mind that.
I don't know what to think of the "right" versus "true". Who's to say that the initial information was ever true to begin with?
That's some real promotional testimonial with its optimism. People using technology to make themselves into better people? Since when? Since WHEN?
This is definitely my favorite story of his two collections by far.

Omphalos
My first thought was to take it face value. Creationism is real, because they're in a simulation, but it wasn't?
As far as I'm concerned, the simulation argument is a religious one.
It was ok.

Anxiety is the Dizziness of Freedom
I don't think I'd use this service, as Dana says, I don't have to wonder, I know I've made mistakes. I don't need something to tell me how my life could have been different, that's easy to imagine. I don't think this is the worst or darkest timeline by any means though.
This may be the worst social network possible. Rather than comparing yourself to all these people who seem to be Living Their Best Life, so why aren't you, except it IS you and you aren't doing that. Truly people will find all the ways possible to make themselves miserable.
"authors faced competition from pirated copies of books they might have written."
Ah, so you thought global competition was bad, huh? Better start preparing to compete against an infinite number of yourselves. Oh, but I never became a novelist in this timeline and I'd love to read the books I'd have written without actually having written them. Even only the absolute best of all worlds would be more than could be experienced than a lifetime.
What a nice ending. Enjoyable.

Rating: 4/5 Rating anthologies and collections is a bother.

This was very disappointing, and awfully written. I gave up somewhere during book 2. Apparently every person in this world plasters their feelings on their face; it's so tiring to read books where I am being told what to think and feel. Also, what in the fuck is up with this guy and using 'ae'? Is that the most fantasy-sounding letter combination he knows?

>> No.16002885

>David and Leigh Eddings were the co-authors of the Belgariad, Malloreon, Elenium, Tamuli and Dreamers fantasy series, which cumulatively have sold almost 20 million copies. The Belgariad, in particular, is often hailed as a formative post-Tolkien fantasy series, serving as a frequently-recommended gateway book for new and younger readers to the genre.

>The Eddings married in 1962. They adopted a son in 1966 and a daughter several years later. In 1969, alerted by neighbours to the sounds of mistreatment at their South Dakota property, police arrived to find the adopted son locked in a cage in a dirty basement (the basement shared with several animals) and being beaten by his parents with a belt. The Eddings were arrested and the children removed into protective custody (subsequently their adoption of the children was revoked). During the subsequent trial, exacting details of physical and emotional abuse emerged, with the children imprisoned in the cage for the slightest perceived disobedience and corporal punishment being regularly administered. Both children were traumatised by their experiences.

I'm trying to figure which book I read in middle school.

The plot was this guy getting to the bottom of a ufo conspiracy theory. He finds out that the aliens are just very old humans who used to work for the nazis, discovered immortality and spaceflight, and moved to Antarctica after WW2. At the end he travels there, meets their leader and joins the group. Can't remember the name for the life of me and not much else besides the general plot. Ring a bell for anyone else?

The plot twist was that it was just really advanced Americans from like the mid 19th century

There is no other woman as beautiful who I can read Fantasy with. There is nobody else with such an easygoing personality as her, as funny as she is. She still has innocence, because she was homeschooled.

Yet she is married. She has a child and is on her way to adopting another one.

>the Idea
Guy walks into some store in the most racist place in the USA.
He is black(it will really fuck with people's mind), somebody gives him some racist slur or some shit, and he shoots them.

People in store also has guns, they gun him down, he gets up and kills them all, even the children.
Police arrive, they gun him down, he gets back up kills them all.

Later he approaches the on scene TV Crew and makes an announcement on a Live Broadcast, telling everyone that anyone one insulting or attempting harm on his person will be executed.

The reporter says something along the lines of "What gives you the right to kill people, who he thinks insulted him?"

He shows a perfect 3d holographic image, that has strange characters/images. He then goes to explain that he has the "right" to do as he because because he is now the ruler of this solar system.

He says the image shown is the Deed of the Solar system and he just bought it off the being we called God, then goes to list other deities that are found throughout other faiths and through the ages, explaining they are one and the same being trying different ways of rule.

He says unlike our former creator, he likes to take a personal interest in his work.

After other forms of law enforcement and military fail at killing him, a tremor goes through the world as they try to reassess their life and their place in it.

Story follows the new god, has lost of heavy mysticism, magic/energy that defies the laws of physics and advance technology that we can't even comprehend, even when we are sat down and it's explained in depth.

Depends on what you're looking for. I read all three, and enjoyed the series overall. I even reread parts that were done particularly well like some of the gladatorial combat. I thought books 1 and 2 were the best in terms of world building. Some plots were not resolved in the best way in the third (imo), but conclusion was satisfying.

Spoilers: main chic goes girl-on-girl by book 2 which was kinda hawt ngl. There was some disgusting fag stuff, but it was only alluded to.

Tropes of interest: Rome, assassin school, death God, vengeance, gladiators, monster-whisperer. I thought the magic was fun, and the assassin school trope in particular was well done ...but perhaps everything just tickled my buttons because I loved the overall Roman basis of the series.

The woman in that video only casually watched Ellis's video essays and said more or less the same thing.

From what I've gathered, it's a standard first contact story but with Lindsay Ellis humor and Lindsay Ellis fetishes (see her videos on Beauty and the Beast and The Shape of Water). It apparently also tries to ape Arrival by dealing heavily with linguistics.

I'm probably going to read it just to see what a Lindsay Ellis book is like. I think people pretty much already know whether or not they're going to like the book based on how much they like/dislike her YouTube videos.

Currently reading this and The Witcher books as my first fantasy series due to them not following the "1000 pages per book in a long 15 books series lmao" meme and I am enjoying both of them a lot, are The Elric Saga and the Tolkien books worth reading? Yes you should read Tolkien. Understand that it is classic high literature though and not exactly "easy." If you can appreciate it though you will love it. There is a reason it has the reputation it does.

For GOT- IMO no. That series will never be finished by the original author, so unless you are ok with being eternally blue-balled I would stay away. I read the first two myself years ago, I liked them but dropped them before I got too attached once I realized the author was not going to finish.

This was the /sffg/ book for July.
4 people in the group finished it this month. A 5th has it marked as currently reading.

The Snail on the Slope - Arkady & Boris Strugatsky (1966), 2018 translation edition, Russian.

I've tried reading other books by these authors and wasn't interested. Their novel Roadside Picnic is well regarded by those who have read it on /sffg/. I don't tend to enjoy allegory and this very much was one. Of the two viewpoint characters, I liked Peretz better, because Candide was even sillier. Both are stuck in nightmarish limbo, Peretz in a bureaucratic one, and Candide in a surreal one. Nothing interested me. Not the characters, setting, plot, themes, or whatever else. The prose is fine and does well in establishing its thematic content. There were so many random antics that intended to disorient both the reader and viewpoint characters. Basically, stuff happens, or it doesn't, and it'll matter or it won't.

>If you see something without understanding it, you may as well have thought it all up. I'm living it, seeing it, and not understanding it; I'm living in a world that someone else has thought up without bothering to explain it to me, or maybe even to themselves...

>And everything will be full of deep meaning, in the same way that the behavior of any complicated system is full of deep meaning, and it will all be strange, and it will therefore be meaningless to us, at least to those of us who still haven't gotten use to the meaninglessness and accepted it as the norm.

The Afterword was far more interesting to me than the novel itself. It's a nice summation of their attitude, outlook, and much else.
>How should he behave, when he realizes that the direction of progress, and he finds it abhorrent?

>The novel stopped being science fiction (assuming it ever had been) and became simply fantastic, grotesque, symbolic

>on the whole remained entirely inaccessible to the general reader. I can count on one hand the number of people who fully grasped the entirety of the authorial intent.
Intentional obscurantism isn't something I tend to enjoy.

2/5, not my sort of novel.

TL;DR An atmospheric novel where the reader is meant to be as confused as the characters.

Silk in Book of the Long Sun is a very Moses-like character, but this may not e what you're looking for.

So I’m trying to come up with a title for my story, which is about a magical forest that holds many secrets. I already have titles for the individual books, but it was only recently that I came up with the main title for the series.

Main title: lands beyond the horizon
Book 1: a forest of wonder
Book 2: among wooden giants
Book 3: the grassy sea

There will be more books than just 3, but those are the ones that have titles to them. Do you think they’re any good, or should I keep thinking?

Yeah sure, cool to do that but then you're not writing what you want so you'll start to hate it.

Overall 3/10 advice to be honest. I'd get more out of learning how to write prose from Sanderson than that.

Coming from a background of studying Drama (plays) and Literature (""""""""Serious"""""""" literature) at Uni; I'd say broad influence outside of the genre you wish to write could be more helpful than learning from the same robotic voice.
Drama helped me nail dialogue and pacing. Lit helped with structure and general writing practice.

I've no idea what the fuck you're saying but by master, he's clearly referring to the reader, and a reader knows what he likes to read, not just subject but style wise.

Wolfe wrote in imitation of other writers. Sure, Hemingway was a trend setter. But Proust? Chesterton? What reader and aspiring writer followed those trends in the 70s lmao
