Explain to me why this is anything other than boring without using the words "existential" or "motif".

You can't I don't think.

Was Meursault even supposed to be likable? Were you meant to be rooting for him? What a mediocre book.

>> No.1599636

Because if he wrote it any other way it would detract from it's original purpose.

>> No.1599637

I like it because it manages to simultaneously be a philosophical fable yet the characters feel human.

It wasn't existentialist anyway, it was absurdist.

Which is?

>>1599637

You have to be joking... Which characters felt human? You can't be referring to Meursault who was basically the only character. The one time Meursault did anything endearing was when he admitted that he offered that caretaker the cigarette at his mothers funeral.

You think characters have to be sentimental to be human?

What about when he said he'd kiss his friend for defending him?

>> No.1599651

I agree with you, OP. I do like the last few pages though because they have some philosophy. It's still mediocre though, idk why people rate it so highly.

I knew some idiot would comment on my wording. No I don't. I'm just saying that Meursault was about as far from seeming "human" as a character can be.

I also liked the end, other guy who posted. But that was about it.

And Truman I can appreciate that it was absurdist, but that doesn't make it any more interesting.

>> No.1599660

I did not care for it. I read the myth of Sisyphus which shed some light on the outsider, and is a good read in itself. The Fall is the book I love him for, by far his best work.

Exile is great
the stranger is a masterpiece. THE masterpiece of the 20th century.

It shows how absurd are the vicissitudes of life and how things doesn't require an intrinsic meaning. Also it's funny to see how the protagonist reacts(?) to things.

Wasn't the idea of the book to show that being honest all time isn't a very human thing to do?

He wasn't honest all the time.

Meursault never lies about his own feelings.

>> No.1599713

The Robert Frost quotation was kind of tacky.
Also, I felt there was some weird sexual tension between Ponyboy and Johnny.

>> No.1599718

yeah, the thing that separates meursault is that he doesn't lie, he doesn't feign feelings at his mothers funeral.
