What the fuck? I staved off the urge to read this from hype for FAR too long. The whole thing is naturalistic, tersely so, but still beautiful. I teared up during the part where Stoner and Edith are trying to conceive

No irony lol, I particularly mean the part immediately after she becomes pregnant. Hard to explain. That paroxysm of passion initially seemed like some fresh start in their relationship, but was outed as a fleeting affectation. Specifically this part on 85/86 is what got to me:
>She made it clear to her husband that she could not endure the touch of his hand upon her, and it began to seem to him that even his looking at her was a kind of violation. The hunger of their passion became a memory, and at last Stoner looked upon it as if it were a dream that had nothing to do with either of them. So the bed that had been the arena of their passion became the support of her illness.

I absolutely loved Butcher's Crossing, but I believe it's generally considered his weakest novel. Augustus is magnificent too, even won the National Book Award back in 1973.

Both of those books are very different compared to Stoner, though there is arguably some thematic overlap. However, I'd say they're worth checking out if you liked Stoner.

I meant a book from Edith's perspective. By the way, what do you guys make of the theory that she was abused/molested by her father? It would really help me to understand her psychotic behavior, such as her driving a wedge between Stoner and his daughter.

i dont buy the theory and i think one of the reasons the novel works so well is precisely because Edith comes off as an irredeemable cunt.
shes a dumb dirty hooer who becomes a massive cunt because, like Stoner, she didn't have the will or the drive to take control of her life. unlike Stoner, who generally just takes the ass poundings of life, Edith lashes out with her cunty little schemes and tricks. and then she has the galls to pretend she's the victim
>no one forced Edith to marry Stoner
>in fact, no one forced Edith to take many of the horrible decisions she ended up taking
Edith is a bitch. that's all there is to it. she represents the archetypal woman. those who deviate are outliers. the rest are different only in their varying degrees of the Edith spectrum.
sometimes there aint deeper meanings. sometimes people just are.
