For Fichte main works, start with his political writings and the introductions he wrote himself:
1. Destiny of Man
2. Destiny of the Scholar
3. Adresses to the german nation
1. First and Second introduction to the Doctrine of science

bro they all lived in the same 2 small towns and knew eachother. hegel holderlin and schelling were roommates, goethe and schiller hosted intellectuals out of weimar (that's what made weimar famous), the schlegel brothers did the same from their place in jena and invited fichte to come teach university there etc.

Assuming you're familiar with Kant's Critique of Pure Reason, I would at the very least get the book Between Kant and Hegel and read Schulze's Aenesidemus excerpt there, then Fichte's reply. Then go read the two introductions to the Wissenschaftslehre and just dive in to the Wissenschaftslehre.

why not take his own word for it?

"Anyone who has not understood Hume, Aenesidemus, and Maimon and has failed to come to terms with the issues they pose is by no means ready for the Wissenschaftslehre; it answers questions he has not yet raised and bandages him where he has suffered no injury."

It's a compilation of German texts not secondary literature you absolute idiot. If OP can read German he can go read Aenesidemus and Fichte's reply in the original German, if not, Between Kant and Hegel has the English translations.
