Why doesn’t Turgenev get more respect on lit?

>> No.15968986

Because Dostoyevski exists

Only book I read was father and sons but I enjoyed it. It was similar to Dostoevsky in that it was concerned about western liberalism harming Russian Orthodoxy.

Why doesn't Goncharov get more respect on lit?

He should get more respect. A Sportsman's Sketches is my favorite of his.

just read this, really enjoyed it.

Father and sons is great. Made me realize everyone complains about the past and thinks the new generation sucks. When you outgrow these sentiments I think your life will generally improve

>> No.15970954

>>15970407
This is his best work that survives comparison with other authors.

>>15970946
Fathers and Sons is a Dosto with no direction and weak philosophical depth. Awful choice.

>> No.15970977

>>15970954
It's a solid novella. It's not as deep nor profound as dosto or tolstoy but it still provides an excellent narrative of the time albeit in compact form. The relationship between arkady and his dad still bothers me

There are two reasons.
1) /lit/ does not read and ignores how to discuss literature
2) the oldfags of yore who held that Turgenev was better than both Tolstoy and Dostoevsky are long gone. Nobody remembers the anecdote of how old Ivan made them look like such fools to the point Dosto wanted to give him a beating (or challenge him to a duel, can't remember) over some money or a particular literary piece, or how Tolstoy admitted he was the better writer (might be making this up). Imho, it was mostly a meme or something only visible in Russian because there's no way any translated Turgenev reads better than W&P or Brothers K.

Because most of /lit/ are teenagers like this anon >>15968986

Teens like edgy, angsty books that validate their volatile hormone-driven emotional life.

Turgenev is usually loved by old people who long ago settled on bourgeois consensus and conformity of petty, banal, emotion and tepid ideals. It nourishes them.

>> No.15971623

It's because this board is filed with nihilists, obviously.

>Fathers and Sons is a Dosto with no direction and weak philosophical depth. Awful choice.
F&S is far superior to the slog that was Demons.

>> No.15971670

>>15971623
Huh? Turgenev is the person who popularized the term "nihilist" (in Fathers & Sons).

You sound 12.

Turgenev is a far better stylist than Dostoyevsky
