What does /Lit/ think of Leopardi? Expecially regarding his philosopy. I'm asking because he's doomercore at its finest, and he's the pessimistic par excellence. Right now I'm reading his prose work "Operette Morali" and it's a fine piece of literature

I can only assume you're italian because for some reason no one else gives a fuck about him despite his spiritual affinities with several beloved lit authors, I suppose his work was translated late or poorly and therefore never made its way into international canon or relevance?

Leopardi is one of the few true geniuses who foretold the limits of the Enlightenment without completely rejecting it

Exactly, but I couldn't tell why he's so unknown outside of Italy. I wonder if there are many that suffered from the same destiny (well known in their countries, but unkown in the others)

He was too extreme, but I like that he kept a sense of humor. His crusade against all illusions reeked of sour grapes and I say this as someone who agrees with pessimism. He both contributed to pessimism and at the same time made a disservice to it by being a whiny little bitch.
