>upper division renown creative writing program
>everyone gets in a circle
>spend 3 hours reading 15 pages of a novel >everyone makes up criticisms on the spot because the professor gives us no time to digest it
>you made a typo here
>you didn't tell me enough about X character's relationship immediately, it seems gray ->
>complain about missing parts of the story not in the story
>no one is ever taught how to critique
>no one gives a shit about other peoples work, only cares about writing their own work
>professor doesnt give a shit about the class because hes working on a book thats going to get published at the end of the year
>everyone comes out dumber at the end of the semester
this major is a total meme, the absolute only thing it does is give you the space to focus on writing fiction

your fault for taking a class on how to write instead of just writing

It's not a class about how to write, it's just an entire semester of critiquing other people's work, every critique is shit because no one actually has any time to digest anything, and everyone is critiquing the long term stories in a 15 page snippet of a novel because they either don't care or don't know how to critique, but you're right

the secret is to major in literature and enroll in classes with professors who made their living in creative fields. You get the best of both worlds. Literature focused curriculum and assignments will often have creative writing options.
