The only way to save American literature is to destroy Manhattan with a series of carpet bombings concentrated around the McSweeny's building.

I get more enjoyment out of a cliche (but well-written) sci-fi/fantasy novel than most contemporary serious literature.

Saying a book (or a film or anything else for that matter) is "artistic" is empty praise. Anything can be art if you want it to be, it doesn't mean it's enjoyable or good.

That is unsurprisingly common.

I honestly think the world needs a benevolent dictator in order to achieve real progress. One who can concoct a lie that will replace all the other sweet lullabies humanity sings to itself.

I'm not catholic, but I genuinly believe that literature is in a sorry state because there are fewer Catholic writers in the mainstream then there were a couple generations ago.

I believe that nobody knows what great writing is anymore and that's why the most successful writers write about sparkling vampires because it appeals to largest demographic.

Philosophy is dead. there is nothing new to think of that would be considered thinking outside the box.

We need to have another enlightenment era. one that questions the current foundations and scientific facts we hold so dear to be true.

we must understand that our physics "law" only affects what we see and there is very much a variable where our "laws" are jokes.

if you're a student access the Daedalus archives via your library account (digital or physical)

there's plenty of exciting stuff going on, you're not putting in enough effort to find it. if anything, the social sciences, combined with technological developments in communications, archives and empirical science have opened the doors to such a vast territory of potential knowledge we're having a hard time covering it all.

"America is now wholly given over to a damned mob of scribbling women, and I should have no chance of success while the public taste is occupied with their trash–and should be ashamed of myself if I did succeed. What is the mystery of these innumerable editions of the ‘Lamplighter,’ and other books neither better nor worse?–worse they could not be, and better they need not be, when they sell by the 100,000."

Nathaniel Hawthorne, 1855

You have almost the EXACT same complaint he had, and yet, look what's been published since then. The world of literature isn't ending, it's always been this way. All the same, I wish you luck.

- email or talk to professors. since they are often required to publish and "keep up" with current affairs in their department, they're probably familiar with at least some recent seminal/landmark works (i'm thinking a time frame of the last 15-20 years) and maybe some very recent trends (5 years). varies from professor to professor, some care more than others about this kind of thing.
- i'd also recommend seeing if universities in your area or the nearest larger metropolitan area sponsor a distinguished lecture series.
- go to jstor and look up philosophy journals, then just browse the latest published theses and works. see if they rely heavily on any particular source or citation.

wikileaks, crowd leaks, anonleaks and other sites themselves are statements on the state of journalism, which will have an affect on philosophical thinking. i kind of understand where you're coming from (all previous movements of philosophy have been exhausted, what could possibly be next?), just keep in mind that time is a good editor. especially with so many eyes and minds in academia, a consensus will inevitably emerge (right now its looking like human rights, for better or worse)
