Are any of these good? What are some books that talk about previous and potential future extinctions that aren't typical pop sci but neither super academic treatises with several volumes spanning each event?

the Kolbert book was assigned for my ecology course at uni and I thought it was quite good. I'd suggest reading that and then finding something more purely academic if it ends up not being enough to satisfy you.
