I'm not blind, but those are youthful frivolities. My trouble with him is his half-hearted Freudianism: he puts a sexual superstructure over all social interaction and cultural expression (however much I dislike using that word) yet doesn't commit entirely to the Nietzschiean will-to power or the Freudian id; not for any rational consideration, but simply because the revolts at the cultural decay he describes. This makes his worldview and most of his lamentations pathetic imo. Note that I am specifically bothered by this reading his 'Possibilité sur un île', where the protagonist's anguish at his limp dick is supposedly a condition to be read into most Westerner's lives. I liked his Particules Elementaires a lot, but it still misses the mark somewhat. If anything, the first-mentioned novel is a picture of Houellebecq's inability to recognize a life devoted to beauty, to the aesthetic, as not only possible, regardless of the epoch we live in, but also far superior.
