Southern Europe achieved a lot. More than that, they achieved incredible things beyond any other civilisation before or after on any of the continents still above water. This can not be underestimated. Southern Europe gets a gold medal. Northern Europe receives a silver medal, they are the lesser brother who still, relative to the rest of the world, outperforms nearly everyone else.

The thing people must understand is that the southern Europeans who achieved such greatness don't really exist anymore. Go back 2000 years and Northern Euros and Southern Euros were branches of the same Aryan family. However, Southern Europe was already populated, so when they pushed to the south, and conquered them, a very similar thing happened there that happened in India. Despite establishing themselves as a ruling cast they engaged in mass miscegenation with the conquered native Europeans. This only accelerated with contact with the near east. The result is that in the present day southern Europe is the antecedent of the current Amerimutt phenomenon, yet it occurred long enough back that the scions of this union think that it has always been the way it is, that history froze 2000 years ago and perfectly preserved the races of the past.

Northern Europe was less populated, so when the Aryans pushed in to those territories they didn't have to concern themselves as heavily with concepts of racial divides and protecting their ethnoculture. Ironically this is why Scandinavian countries now seem to have no sense of self-preservation, as historically they didn't need one as intense as their south-western cousins.
