Did Dante surpass his mentor, Virgil, as a poet? Is the Divine Comedy a greater epic than the Aeneid?

>The good artist believes that nobody is good enough to give him advice. He has supreme vanity. No matter how much he admires the old writer, he wants to beat him.

> I have come to believe that a great teacher is a great artist and that there are as few as there are any other great artists. Teaching might even be the greatest of the arts since the medium is the human mind and spirit.

The Eclogues are Virgil's pastoral poems, not the Georgics.

Still very good, though. And I do love pastoral poetry, I wish /lit/ would talk more about it, it's a very underrated but intensely powerful genre of poetry.

As do I. I feel drawn to the ideal that they represent. Some of my favs are Arcadia by Sannazaro or La Galatea by Cervantes. Which are yours?

Virgil is the most perfect poet to have ever existed, so I don't think Dante surpassd him as a poet but the Divine Comedy is certainly better than the Aeneid.
